4.0 5 speed 3000 rpm @ idle....HELP

96 Explorer XLT,never had a problem. Now it's been to the mechanic who is very reputable here in town.He said he swapped all sensors and still it idles between 2500-3000 rpms.I unhooked the IAC and the idle is now too low and wants to stall at idle most of the time.Problem is about a 2 weeks old now and I'm driving it with the IAC unplugged. Can't find a vacuum leak and going crazy because if it don't have a carb I am lost. The mechanic says replacing the computer is the next step.Anything I can try before replacing it would sure save my pocket, especially since he didnt seem sure this was the sure fix.Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try a new mechanic. You unplugged the IAC and it idles low. Hhhmmm, what could that point to? Replacing sensors and this and that works sometimes, and can be cheap if you get lucky. But I'd throw a flag on the computer switch. This sounds like a mechanical problem with an electronically controlled part at the throttle area.

Get out the Yellow pages. Ask 'em if they've worked on this, and how many. If you get hims and haws, or 'uhh, let me check', just call the next one. I'd even consider a dealer. Find guys who used to work for Ford with their own shop.

Good luck.

He swapped all the sensors and it still doesn't work? Sounds like he's not really a mechanic, just a parts changer. Some diagnosis needs to be done on it. Have the codes been pulled? Always a good place to start. Also, in replacing sensors did he replace the IAC? (It's not a sensor, it's an actuator.)
