vin, correct engine color
I just purchased a completely restored 1949 f1 8 cylinder. There are no vin plates, not on the glove box door or under hood fender. The fire wall stamped serial number is 7 MP 10 B 189. Is it possible to find the vin with this info.?
Also, what is the correct engine color? Mine is Ford blue.
Any help will be appreciated. Joe

Welcome, Joe!
Careful with the word "restored", has been a touchy subject lately. Your engine most certainly should not be Ford Blue (but mine is!), here are some sources of info on engine color.
http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/f...0to125late.htm
From that site:
"Engine Colors:
Ford engines were generally dark blue in 1949 and changed to bronze in late '49 production through 1951. For 1952 and 1953 the Ford engine was either tangerine red or green. The Ford truck engines were red from 1948 through 1951, and then changed to green for 1952-53.
Mercury engines were green in color from 1949 through 1951. From 1952 to 1953 they were either green or tangerine. "
The red is not a bright red, it is sometimes refered to as Tangerine.

Red
Red for sure in trucks. Duplicolor DH 1608 is very close and is good for 1200F

What year truck do I really have?
I'm having the same problem trying to figure what year truck I have, if any can help it would be appreciative as well.
First where was the truck manufactured?, it is a 3-speed 6 cylinder on the column, it has a wood bed and courtesy dome light buttons in the doors.
When I read the information it states that I have a 49 or 50 or 51, well I'm sure its not a 1951 because of the front grille even though I have a wood bed, my limited understanding is that the 48-50 had a metal bed.
My VIN doesn't indicate the Assembly Plant location which again eliminates that it is a 51
The courstesy lights on the door to engage the dome light indicates to me along with the wood bed that I might have a crossover or late model 50 or what some may call a 50 and 1/2.
I believe it is a 50 model but not sure because the shifter is on the column and the 49 it was on the floor.
Any definitive help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Well, if it was a 51 it would have the large back window as well. 51 also had the bullet grille as opposed to the horizontal bars. However 51 was the first year of the column shift. 48-50 had an instrument panel where 51/52 had a round speedometer and a seperate round cluster of four gauges.
Here is a picture of a 51 interior:
It is entirely possible that you have a "mut" on your hands. It may be a 51 truck that someone replaced the front sheet metal with 48-50.
Here is a 48-50 (essentially) the same and a 51 front end:
1950
1951
Can you post a picture of the truck - both front and back? And where are you reading the VIN number from?

What year truck do I really have?
Julie
Here is the VIN number 97HC329717
The front looks like the 50 you posted. My truck was bought in Wasco California brand new in October of 1950, I have a picture of the truck in 1952 and the front does look exactly the same as your posting, the window is small and the 3 speed shifter is on the column. The orginal color was an off white with a tint of blue. In the LMC Truck magazine it describes the differences of the 49 to the 50 and states that the only difference is that on the 50 model the shifter is on the column. It also states that the wood bed was offered in 51. Appreciate your help in solving the mystery. Lastly I was told that the Assembly Plant for the 50 was Dearborn Michigan?
thanks
