slipping clutch

Lately i have been only getting horrable gass milage with my truck, 89 4wd f150 and 4.9/5spd. I filled it up full "like $50 arggg, and only put on about 130 miles. Also with the bad gass milage the bellhousing/clutch area is making a growling sound when the clutch is engaged. So i pretty much figure my clutch is going to the clutch heaven LOL. I tested it by putting it in 5th and slowly let out the clutch it should kill it as soon as the clutch engages but just like a thought it just slipped like crazy and made a nice growling sound. So is it better to buy just the disc or buy a whole kit?

thanks NIck

Buy the whole kit, you also need a reman flywheel or have yours resurfaced.

Is the slip test in 5th gear what you should do for a test, im not shure i just know it shouldnt slip that easily. Also what type and brand of clutch because i notice that they make a 10inch for F150 and and 11inch for F250 clutches. Would i have to get a flywheel to match the clutch size or can they interchange. Because i would think that a 11inch would have more holding power than a 10 inch because i plow alot of snow.

Some F150's had 11in clutch, and others had the 10in. The only way to know which you have as far as I know is to measure the disk. However if your flywheel has the bolt holes for both patterns you can use either (my truck did but it wasn't a stock flywheel) clutch kit. All you should need is new bigger bolts to mount the 11in clutch. I use a centerforce dual friction and it works great, but is pricey. I have heard great things about LUK (what my flywheel is) and they are cheaper. I read that someone had problems with clearance issues with an 11in clutch with their bellhousing but a little grinding cured it. I had no such issues, but I have the T-18 4 speed. I think the same applies to your 5 speed but not sure. Something to look into though.

Really thats interesting because at the parts house they said that gwr 8500 and up was 11in and gwr 8500 and down was 10 in. So i figured the gwr 8500 and up was for an 250 and 350 and gwr 8500 and down was for an f150. Is my thinking correct. But thats interesting because for a small price i can put a bigger clutch in which would hold more. I guess i will find out when i pull the trans to get to the clutch how big it is and if it has both sets of bolt holes I learn something every day LOL

Thanks nick

I also have T-18 and I also upgraded to an 11" clutch using my stock flywheel. I ordered a Luk kit from Carolina. I had the flywheel ground and I bought a pilot bearing removal tool from the machine shop, which turned out to be the best investment ever, because I literally could never have gotten it out without it.

It wasn't a hard job. Take your time, put everything back together right, and you'll be fine. I did 99.9% of the work myself with no help.

They might be right and at the same time wrong because the 300 came in some F250 pickups. So it may be stock on a F250 but listed as an upgrade for a F150. I Have an 11in in my F150 and checked autozones website and they sell an 11in LUK kit for you truck and it even says the bolt size you will need. I think they were 3/8 16x 1in. If your flywheel isn't the dual pattern, they aren't that expensive either. One other reason I love these trucks!

All flywheels from about 82 or 83 onwards are drilled for both clutch sizes. The clutch size has to do with the weight and intended use of the truck, not with the engine size.

I see. I did not know that. So does that mean you could possibly tell what size clutch you have but the GVRW weight on the door sticker? When would they use it on a F150 weight wise? Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have seen questions like this several times and no one seems to have a definite answer other than pull it and see.

Basically what i have heared and is seen is that (i might be wrong) trucks that are over 8500 gwr are usually an F250 or F350 and have the larger 11in clutch because of the added weight, and the other ones under 8500 gwr have a 10in clutch because they are a light f150 or bronco. I think most of the flywheels were drilled and tapped for both 11in and 10 inch clutches on the 300 no matter what size truck they came in.

from my understanding the only trucks that came with the 10in clutches are 2wd 1/2tons because i pulled an 11in from a 4wd f150 granted it could have been upgraded but i got a trans from a 2wd f150 300 6 and it had a 10in

i would always suggest upgrading to an 11in mainly because it will last longer than a 10in and ofcouse because it holds more power and will be better for towing
