Side mirror variation

Can someone explain the differences b/wn the side mirrors in these two pics? I see one is mounted completely above the dent and the other straddles the dent. On my '73 the side mirror straddles the dent but I can see the mounting holes for the other style mirrors where the dumb previous owner had tried to fill in.

The top picture Ford mirrors fit 1973-1979 and are year correct for the vehicle.

The Bottom picture Ford Mirrors are for 1992-1996/7, and are not year correct for the vehicle.

Also, the TOP pic is the correct original position for the low mount fold-out mirrors.

Chad, if you get a chance, post this illustration from the parts catalog.

TEXT / Section 176 / Page 3.

ALL these mirrors were available on 1973/79 F100/350's.

Trying to keep track and know which is which...is...to say the least...mind boggling!

Just when one thinks one mirror is correct, look at the shape of the mirror head and the bracket.

To add further confusion, similar mirrors were available at parts stores like NAPA, Sears, Western Auto.

Further note: Excepting Camper and Trailer Specials, Type 5 was standard equipment on all F100/350's, but was not factory installed.

No outside mirrors were factory installed, all were installed by the dealers. Type 5 came in a plastic wrapping, was put inside the cab at the factory.

Since most people wanted something else, dealers had dozens of Type 5. Most were thrown away...no, I'm not kidding.

Why weren't any mirrors factory installed?

If the customer wanted something else, the mirror holes would have to be filled in and the door repainted....simple as that!

I have the exact same illustration.
Look at the mirrors on my truck. They aren't on there and they aren't factory, look how far back the mirror is on the little mounting bracket.
And some-where Bill said there where 15 types of mirrors on these trucks.(There's only 13 on your chart)

Those are the 1992/96/97 mirrors. The driver's side mirror bracket look factory. Passenger side doesn't look like factory.

In-correct mirror...the mirror bracket should come straight out from the door.

The bracket is angled upwards, so the mirror does not sit level.

Type 8 is what came with 1975 and later Super Camper & Trailer Specials = D5TZ17696A .. Mirror

The mirror head came with the mirror or was available by itself = D5TZ17723A .. Mirror Head.

Here's one for ya... How about extendable mirrors for trailer towing... I doubt they're factory though, they may be a dealer add-on or something...

I have my own copy of the catalog.(I actually bought it for 20.00 of my own money,I think I have had my CD longer than you.I bought it about 1 and half years ago.)
And both of the mirrors, are the same, and neither are factory.
That slider is cool...
I want the Camper Special Mirrors on my truck what it had on it 30 years ago) (Most likely Type 2?)

Look these puppies up...for example, there are three Type 9's, the mirror heads are slightly different.

There may be more variations. The mirrors above are the types used, but when one looks up the mirrors in the catalog under types, there can and will be variations.

Econolines used some of these same mirrors. While the heads may be the same, the brackets are NOT the same, due to the Econoline having a different door contour.

Anthony, a while ago, you told me you bought the CD, then you told me you lost it...now you're saying you found it again?

See post 9 for the correct Stupor Camper/Trailer Special Mirrors.

I think it was.

Maybe Bill (NumberDummy) can shed some light on this.

I think they were a dealer-only item, I recall selling a few of them when people didn't want the Dumbo mirrors (type 8).

I don't?

Well, kid, let's see...I've been around much longer than you have. In fact, I was around when they introduced the all new 1973 Ford pickup. Hell, I bought one. I've thumbed through parts catalogs on my own when the CD-ROM wasn't even invented yet...don't potty-mouth your elders, kid. They might teach you something if you didn't have the competence of a sawed-off shotgun.

Actually 1982-1991 Mirrors.

The 1980-1981 have different (triangular heads) but use the same bracket.

The ones on the red Super Camper special are bent out of shape to fit.

The only major difference between 1980-1991 and 1992-1996/7, beside the mirror heads, the top bracket is turned upside down for the 1992-1996/7, and the bracket is slightly different as consequence.

Most ford mirrors are reproduced aftermarket, made in China. crappy (What looks like is on the super camper special, BTW)
