Marmon-Herringtons and headers

Have any of you folks put a set of headers on your M-H? It looks like my pto might cause some clearance problems. And does the 239 Flathead need an H pipe to balance the exhaust?

Hey old buddy, I think you might want to give the old girl a bath before the header install or you could start some forest fires.

Yeah I've cleaned him up since I took that picture. 58 years of sediment, the stuff set up like asphalt.

The Red's Headers I have (F-1) would run smack into the PTO. But they make dozens of different types and models, including center-dumps, so something is bound to work. No H-pipe needed.

I think the only headers that would hit would be the tri-y type. Flathead headers come out a ways, then drop down. No, the flathead does not need a balance pipe, the reason we used to run balance pipes was to sorten the exhaust tone to eliminate the rap. Back in the day, if you wanted loud pipes, you put a penny in each heat riser hole (this was an equalizer) and with steelpacks, they got real loud......
