02 f250 4wheel drive problems

front axle will not engage! thought it was the transfercase acuator for the shift on the fly replaced it. then thought it was the hubs ,wanted warn manuel hubs anyway, replaced them with the warns. still not working. recently changed all gear oil and inspected inside the pumpkins all looks really good. changed the vacuum actuator on the fender well still nothing! any ideas where to start next? its driving me nuts and hunting season will be here b4 you know it!

Welcome to FTE. So you've got warn hubs and switching them to lock still doesn't put you in 4wd? If you lock the hubs, can you spin the front drive shaft by hand with the truck in park?

I'm by no means a 4wd expert, but if it were me, my next step would be to jack up the front end, put it in 4wd, and spin a tire to see if the tire will spin or try and move the drive shaft. Or stick it in neutral and spin the front drive shaft and see if you can make the wheels turn.

If you do a search you can read all night about 4wd engaging. Crawl under there and turn your front driveshaft by hand and then turn each front u-joint by hand. If you don't know if it is working, get on a gravel road and hit the gas hard from a stop and then look at your tracks on both front sides. Also; you should get that wiggly feel from the front u-joints because they speed up and slow down rapidly as they turn.

If that isn't a typo, then you have a problem. The purpose of the hub locks is to connect the hubs to the front axle shafts. With the hubs locked and the front tires on the ground, none of the front axle components or the front drive shaft should spin with the t-case in 2wd.

With both hubs locked and the front tires on the ground, try to turn each axle shaft at the u-joint next to the steering knuckle (it takes some effort.) If either one turns, then your hub locks are not engaging or the splines on the stub shaft are stripped. You'll have to take it back apart and determine which one it is.

If neither shaft turns at the u-joints, but the driveshaft spins, there is a problem in the differential.

If everything is locked up it should work. Are you sure it's not working? I would say blown spider gears but you said you checked it. Next I would say an axle is twisted off at the splines.

ok checked it all out again! every thing spins when hubs are out and in 2 wheel drive. lock hubs and and in two wheel drive knuckles do not turn and either does the front drive shaft. hubs locked and in 4wheel drive knuckles lock and driveline does not turn.so what do you guys think? front driveline should spin when truck is in 2 wheel drive even if hubs are locked shouldnt it? it shouldnt it only lock the driveline lock when i engage the 4 wheel drive?still lookin for all help i can get! thanks for all your help keep it comin im gettin closer i think!

The front driveshaft shouldn't spin in 2WD with wheels on the ground and axles locked. That is why I think you might have a broken long axle near the splined end.

well im back with the same problem! never got it fixed yet. i took it to the local transmission shop and they told me that it was the clip on the transfer case motor! say the see it alot, and with it not getting good connection it probably took out the motor. so i replaced both still not working> knuckles lock drivline locks up but dont turn wheels . im worried it the axles splines. anything else you guys can think of to check b4 i tear into it and check axles! also can any one tell me where the relays are? ive looked in my owners manuel nothing searched and searched under hood cant find.
