HELP Please!!

I just replaced my oil cooler on my truck (had a horrible time getting that to seal) and now its blowing the seal out of the side of the oil filter. I replaced the filter when I changed the oil w/ the cooler (a fram) and that leaked, that only had a cut seal so I stole the seal from the old filter and that worked for one trip to and from work (about 30 miles total). On the next trip it blew out the seal, just bought a new one from Advanced and it blew the seal instantly it actually made the flat bottom of the filter dome shaped. Oil pressure reads normal for the few seconds it runs.

I have never had good luck or been a fan of Fram filters.

My two filters of choice are either,
Motorcraft Power Stroke filter FL 1995
Fleetguard LF 3630

Both filters are the large two quart versions.

On a side note, the oil pressure regulator is in the rear oil cooler header and bleeds excess pressure to the crankcase.
Any chance you blocked that passage when you reinstalled the oil cooler?

I suppose thats possible, I guess I'll pull the cooler off and check. Two more quick questions: Do you have any pics of the regulator? And what do you think about using the tube gasket sealer stuff on the oil cooler? Thank you for your help, I was completely lost.

I used a bit of RTV on the gaskets when I installed mine.
But I am not a fan of very much RTV on anything.

I have a picture of the regulator, but I am having trouble uploading pictures to my gallery right now.
Well I have not tried for a couple days, I will try later today again.

Dave,

I talked to Adrian about this, the gallery is broke, but the users Album works fine.

I also got the impression the Gallery is not going to be fixed, however he did not say that exactly.

Yes I think the galleries will be fixed, just don't know when.

And there is a new thing, the garage which is another place for pictures.
I have not messed with it yet to figure out if it could replace the galleries.

As for the album's still need to check that out.

What I need to figure out is the tech pictures were hidden in the galleries, only truck pictures were visible.
Yes you could still view the tech albums after you went to the user gallery, but they were not displayed in the gallery list.

I just need to figure out which will work best for me, I have to many tech type pictures I use in my posts.

Trying to figure this all out back this winter when I was not working much would have been great, but not in the middle of my busiest work season.

I don't think the Garage would be the ticket for your techie images, though I have not played with it much.

I have only used the Album, Every since I joined the Gallery has been broke, the Albums let you make the image public or private and thats how I've done it.

Don't know how the broke .... Gallery works!

It's strange that they are upgrading a broken system, In my book thats poor admin.

I did here FTE was wanting to migrate from the Gallery to either the garage or albums in time.

But for those of us with many images in the galleries, it will be continued for an undetermined amount of time.

Basically the gallery was one of the first casualties of the forum software upgrade.

As I read this again, how tight was the oil filter?

Minimum is 1.5 to 2 turns after the gasket contacts the filter adapter.

When I change mine, it goes on as tight as I can get it by hand, then 1.5 turns with the wrench.

Any less and I have a leak.

If the filter is not tight enough, the gasket will blow out.

my origional thought was the same as yours. The first filter was as tight as I could get it by hand the first time then I cranked it right down with a wrench and it held for one trip to and from work.

On a similar note, yesterday I took of the cooler and checked everything aginst the old one. Everything I could see looked fine, there was some gasket sealer in the main oil passage but it was far from being blocked, so we put it back together. I waited 24hrs for the gasket sealer to completely cure before trying to start it. Just started it, the oil filter held out fine for the 10 seconds it ran. Its leaking between the block and the cooler in the front mount again. Any suggestions?

When I do mine, I let the RTV set up rather well before I bolt the parts together.
