Steering column

On a '49 F series, can I remove the steering wheel and column together or is the column/shaft part of the gear box. I tried to loosen the clamp on the tube but it wont budge.

Nope, you have to remove the steering wheel. Once it is off, you have to loosen the clamp down on the tube at the steering box and the dash bracket. If you don't have a headliner in your truck you MAY have just enough room to pull it off over the top on the inside.

As I suspect you will find in reading the thread Old F1 posted, you will "pay hell" trying to get the steering shaft out of the box.
