f100 f150 or f250

Hi, I am looking to buy my first 4x4 ford. I am interested in the 73 to 79 f series models. my question is, what is a better platform for a 4wheel drive truck? an f100, 150, 250 or 350? The differences that I know about are that the axles are different and so are other suspension parts like the springs. A lot of people have f100's or f150's, but from all the posts I read it is usually recommended that they use bigger axles like the dana 60. why not start off with the truck that already comes with the bigger axles?

what kind of stuff are you planning on doing with the truck? bogging, hauling, pulling, what? that would help us out a lot

If you knew you were going to be hauling some heavy loads you may want to go with at least the F-250. Other than than the load/hauling/towing factor, it's whatever you find out there that you like for the price you want to spend.

The truck will be used for work, hauling a large trailor, daily driving, and fun. The work wont be more than moving logs or furniture and yard waste, but I will be towing a large trailor full of garbage. I want the truck to be bullit proof, and I will be putting money in it from paycheck to paycheck. From everything I've read and researched, Im pretty sure I want 1 ton axles front and back, but that is really all I know. I want to be able to climb hills and go in the mud.

well since you are doing all the hauling and pulling and you want it to go through mud. then i would get a 250 high boy or 350 (which will probably be hard to find) high boy is your best best

Ok. Eventually though I want to put a high suspension lift on it and upgrade the running gear, so should I go with a highboy or regular?

well with high boy you will already have quite a bit of lift on it stock. but if you don't like the idea of leaf springs all around then go with regular f250. but i think you will be much more satisfied with the high boy

well if you know trucks then you know a 4wd and 2wd drive alot different. the 4wd is a lot stiffer and heavier suspension. but the high boy 4wd suspension is heavier duty than most and will be a rougher ride but it wont sag much with that heavy trailer

Sounds like you need to go with the Highboy... They have a towing a hauling capability that is up there with the newer trucks... I have a fifthwheel plate in mine so I can pull trailers for friends of mine... and hauling I hauled a 4600 lb gun safe...

But this is just my opinion...

I meant a regular 4x4 or highboy.. but I believe I understand what you are saying. So the an f250 4x4 highboy has even more rugged suspension then an regular f250 4x4?

What is the largest engine that came in a 4x4 in the 73 to 79 fords? Was it the 390? what engine should I be looking for?

there are a lot of engines that came in that truck... I personally recomend the 390 It is my fav... but it is not the most fuel efficent motor in the world... the 400 is a nice solid motor and gets slightly better fuel mileage than the 390... or you can go with the big boy of the 460... but that is a little overkill in my mind...
