ford stopped making, or at least putting the 390 in trucks in 76. personally i like the look of the 78-79 trucks better. but they didnt make the highboy in those years, so if you like the look of 78-79, but want a highboy, you can change the front grill pretty easily.

I like the looks of the 78/79 more than the other years too, thats why I want one. Can you tell me, is there any difference between the 78 and 79 besides the powersteering?

At first I wanted to know between the 78 and the 79, and then I was going to ask about the difference from 78/79's to the 73 thru 77

A Hiboy is a Ford truck that came from the factory as having the following:
- Built from 1967 thru 1977.5.
- F-250.
- 4x4.
- Divorced transfer case.
Trucks that are NOT considered a Hiboy are:
- Any truck built after mid-1977. It goes by Consecutive Build Number in the VIN# anything built starting Y80001 is a 77 1/2. **
- Anything other than an F-250.
There will always be a couple very oddball exceptions but, for the most part, this is it.
Front axle choices in the Hiboy were either the 8 lug Dana 44 or the old style low-slung pinion Dana 60 (commonly referred to as the Dana 50). Engine choices were either the 6 cylinder or 360 2 bbl. Steering was either manual or power ram assist.
It has been pointed out that the 300, 351M, and 400 were the engines available in the 77 model year.

The first year for F-350 4x4s was '79.
Welcome to FTE!
I'LL be happy to help you in any way I can.
Look for a 73-77.5 F-250 4x4.
They are great trucks, and are very dependable.
and as another bonus you get the best looking body style.

ok. But what about the 78/79? Is the only difference between a standard 79 f250 4x4 and a standard 75 f250 4x4 the grill and engine choices?

Yeah and you would have different options available on different years.
it also depends on what trim package you have...(Interior options,I mean) (And outside trim)
The trim packages where:
Custom
Explorer
Ranger
Ranger-XLT (Top of the line from '70-'77)
Then in '78 The Lariat Ranger Came out...
But enough on trim lines,so tell us what your dream truck would have on it,and where your at,and I can help ya look online.

That's correct, except I believe the 351M (M stands for Modified, which I have been told was for smog equipment) Someone told me the 351M/400s where the same block.

This is the thing. My dream truck is a 79 ford 4x4 with a c6. Actually, Id like the 350 but I hear they are really hard to find. So anyways, Im having a hard time finding a 79 f250 4x4, but, I've found a lot of local 73 thru 77 ford 4x4s. From what I know and what I've heard, it sounds like the only difference between the ford I want and the available fords is power steering and the grill.

I've found a few good deals on 6th generation fords, but none of them are the 79, so I've passed them by. But, if some one can tell me that there is no difference mechanically (besides the engine of course) between all the different f250's from the 6th generation, then I will buy one and get the 79 grill later.

What an abortion of misinformation!

ALL 1973/77 F250 4x4 trucks before serial #Y20,000 were highboys. There were no 'regular F250 4x4s'. The only differences were: The steering unit, the frame (narrower), taller blocks, and the gas tank placement. There are over a dozen of GVW ratings for the F250 4x4s. In no way any 'highboy' is more 'rugged' than any other F250 4x4s. That all lies in the GVW rating the truck was originally rated for. 1973/75 F250 4x4s had drums all around. 1976/79 had discs front, drums rear.

F250 4x4s with higher GVW capacity will have dual piston brakes.

Later F250 4x4 trucks (1977 after #Y20001) had lower ground clearance, wider frame, and you no longer can have a gas tank inside the cab.

Front axles were updated throughout the series.

Engine availability:

1973/79 - 300 1v
1973/76 - 360 2v
1977/79 - 351M/400

All of those engines could come with either: Ford 3spd "3-on-tree", Warner T18, NP 435, or C6 auto.

There are hardly any differences throughout the years. But the later, the better. i.e. disc brakes.

Early 4x4s have a different power steering system, which many parts are extremely hard to find for.

If you want the ultimate 4x4 right off the assembly line, look for a 1979 F350. This is the heaviest 4x4 straight from the factory for the 1973/79 trucks.
