My truck is an '08 so this may not apply to yours. When I ordered my truck I wanted the manual lever in the floor with auto-locking hubs. I could not order that combo. I had to get ESOF to get auto-locking hubs. I'm betting yours are manual lock.

i hate auto-locking hubs, yes there nice when they work but they take for ever to engage, esp going into 4x4 low. Thanks ford.

If you have manual 4wd (trans.case lever on floor),then you have manual hubs.

Agreed, with the SD if you have manual shift transfer then as far as I know you will always have manual hubs. I was telling a guy at work here I was getting a new truck with stick shift, manual 4x4, and manual lockouts. He couldnt beleive that they still made those, he's like "you mean you have to get out and turn the knob on the tires? Are you joking?". Some people just either dont get it or are just to friggin lazy. That was one of the reasons I opted for a new SD versus a 150 since I can still get all the manual stuff. Even my current F150 with manual trans and manual 4x4 still only had auto hubs as an option. Thankfully they are at 150,000 miles and no major problems with em yet.. and they have got a lot of use. Only issue the last year or two they started sticking a bit, but have always went into and out of lock even if it might take driving down the road a bit till they unlock. But with the manuals, I'll be practically worry-free.

I'm not lazy but I like my ESOF. It goes into lock mode instantly and usually back out instantly. Why jump out in the mud if you don't have to? Plus I only spend money on grease and a little unlazy effort to keep them going. Plus I can still jump out in the mud etc and lock them if I get bored. Plus I saved +-$300 by not getting Warn hubs. I never could figure out why people like some things but I'm sure there are people that think I'm crazy for liking some things I like.

I'm there with ya bud! I like having that ESOF knob on the dash. Mine has never failed me, but then, about once a year I pull out the hubs, clean, & regrease them. An hours worth of work, but it keeps them working. It's nice when you're driving thru a wicked snowstorm and only need the 4x4 part of the time.

You can have the ESOF. I have the manual hubs and lever and like the simplicity of it all. Look at how many threads there are here about ESOF and auto hubs malfunctioning.

As far as only needing it part of the time in a snowstorm...I just lock in my hubs and use the lever when needed. Same effect.

I dont even like the ESOF in my wife's Expedition. Hated the auto hubs in my old '90 F-150 too (it even had a real lever). BTW, they went belly-up and were replaced with WARNs.

I have the ESOF system, but went for manual hubs myself. I just personally like the reassurance of having a good locked hub, even if I do have to trudge outside in the snow to get to it. Just gives me peace of mind I guess.

Racinghoss; That's because most people think the ESOF is eternal and they would rather spend their money on a easy fix when it quits because they didn't do a little maintenance or they were too lazy to fix it. Again; it's whatever tickles your fancy. I love my ESOF

Touche' You are right about some of those problems being from lack of maintenance.

However, you cant deny that the ESOF system has more possible failure points. The switch, vacuum system, electronics, etc are all more prone to failure (and more expensive to diagnose/repair). Mine is a mechanical hub and a mechanical shift lever - that is it. Less opportunity to fail.
