Smile Tachometer question

Can someone tell me if a tachometer for a four cylinder engine (89 - 92 models) is the same as the six cylinder one. I have the 4 cyl. engine and tach in my truck - It's reading slow. I also have an instrument panel from a 92 Explorer. Would switching tachs work?

I think the tach gets an electronic signal from the pcm (powertrain control module). Does anyone really need a tach? I mean what is it good for, really? Sure it's all hot roddy and whatever, but is it necessary to know exactly how many rpm's you're turning? In a four banger? afterall. If you're going over 2 grand, don't.
