So I have a truck Im working on at work right now with an extended warranty that needs a turbo, # 3 injector and possiable all 8 injectors. Anyways Im not a Ford Diesel tech but have the skills and tools to do this repair. My question is will the turbo which looks to be the orignal of a july 31 2003 engine build be the early style turbo that spools and whistle like crazy? Im almost positive I could clean this Turbo and put it back on the truck but to be honest I rather put a new turbo on it for peace of mind to me. Anyways my plan is to keep this old Turbo as there is no core and clean and reuse it on my truck. Will it work? on a 2006 6.0L I want that insane turbo whistle I hear on the older 6.0L's

You will need the turbo pedastal from a 2003, the turbo bolts on differently, other than that I don't think there is any difference... That would be crazy to put the turbo from a 2003 on a 2006 just to hear the noise...

Wouldnt bother me as I have to pull my turbo off to do the EGR block off as well. So I will need to pedistal then How about rebuilding this turbo and putting the the guts of it inside my 2006 turbo housing

I could sit in the passenger seat and whistle for you if you'd like. Haha just kidding. If I am not mistaken the intake manifold on an '03 is much different than the '04-'07's.
I almost wish they made a wicked wheel for these turbos.
Well its not that important LOL I just like to listen to youyube clips of peoples 03 and early 04 6.0s and you cant say that it dosent sound cool. My 06 whistles but not as good as the early ones. Is it possiable to install the internals of the 03 turbo into an 06 turbo and get the same sound? Thats what I will do if its possiable what is exactly diffrent between the 2 turbos is there more of less of something in these turbos that give them the diffrent sound?

If this is a customers truck, why is the turbo, if its not servicable, going on your truck instead of back on their truck? If all you need to do is clean it up?
This practice was strictly verboten in the shops I worked at.
my truck was built in june 04. maybe i just notice my turbo sound more since the front snorkle of the air filter housing is not attached. shortly after i bought the truck i had to change the air filter and it was missing a latch so i left it off while i got another one. i never put it back on since it seemed to help the fuel milege and it sounded better.
You didn't see the "no core" part of the post? His to keep if it's just going to go in the scrap heap.
Yeah, I read that but I also read this.

Either its no longer servicable or it isn't. Either way it belongs to the customer. How would you feel if a mechanic asked you if they could keep your turbo and all it might need is a good cleaning?
The 2003's have less vanes than all the others (10 I believe) this is why they whistle more
10 vanes on 03-04, 14 on the newer models. More blades on the impeller makes it quieter. Sask, I think I might be with you on this one, unless he knows the guy and maybe he's OK with it?

Ten blades on the 2003, 13 blades on the 2004, and 15 blades on everything after 2004's.
Parts will not be interchangable. Turbine size is different and one of the updates included more bearing surface area.
You can put an 03 turbo on all the trucks by simply changing the pedastal, but you can't put a later model turbo on an 03 without changing the pedastal AND intake because of the balance runner on the 03 intakes that was later discontinued. If you change the intake then you'll have to change the EGR cooler also because of fitment issues.
