M5OD Gear ratio

LAST EDITED ON 11-Aug-01 AT 09:04 PM (EST)[p]Ok...there are two different ratios for just the M5OD. One for the 2.3L and the 5.0L.

2.3L:
1st>3.97
2nd>2.34
3rd>1.46
4th>1.00
5th>0.79

5.0L:
1st>3.35
2nd>1.93
3rd>1.29
4th>1.00
5th>0.68

I'm assuming that seems how it's a full size truck you had the 302 or 5.0 in it correct? If so then the second list is what you need.

Hope this helps some.

M5OD Gear ratio

I also need your technical assistance, as now I have the Mazda 5speed manual installed in my truck, I am not sure about the gear ratios for that trans, may be
1st>3.35
2nd>1.93
3rd>1.29
4th>1.00
5th>0.68

I have a problem now with the truck as when I lunch at full throttle going up hill in 4wd high 1st gear ,the RPM hit the 5200 very quickly and cause the rivlimeter to activate and loss the trucks power in climbing up hill, I doubt if that is due the short 1st ratio of my transmission 3.35 and rear dif ration of 4.56? and 33" tiers
if that is correct then could a c6 with a low gear ratio 1st 2.76 and 2nd 1.76 make peter performance? and get the truck extra climbing power and enough speed going up hill before the RPM gets to it's limit 5200RPM? , or what is the right ratio that will mach my engine and differential ratio of 4.56 and 33" as i also have about 400++ horse power in the truck.

M5OD Gear ratio

My '91 spec book lists the F-150 gear ratios as:

3.90
2.25
1.50
1.00
0.80

I wonder if you might have that gearset in there?

Another thing you might ponder: Ford never offered the 351/Mazda combo from the factory in an F-150 (I know;I wanted one!), and stepped up to the unbreakable ZF 5-spd./351 in the F-250HD.

M5OD Gear ratio

Eddie i have swaped the original 302 engine with a 351w that's why i still have the M5OD. know i am looking for the best gear combination for my truck , i will swap my M5OD with a C6 with a low planetary gear ratio 1st 2.75
2nd 1.57
i need to know if this will improve my acceleration and traveling range when going up hill , as now with my M5OD the truck accelerate good but it kills the engine very quikly, which makes the engine hits the red line and get to the max RPM limit ( 5200) rpm, and could not make it to the top of the hill!!!
it maght be due to the short 3.93 1st
do you thing the c6 with it's ratio will enhance the performance and 4wheel ability of my truck . it will coast me about $3300!

Are you in high or low pulling the hill? If in low, put it in 2nd.

Hell, even if you are in high, put it down in 2nd. 351M with your 'claimed' 400 or 500 horsepower (what does it have done to have this much power?) should probably have enough torque and power to pull a hill in 2nd from a slow roll.

Here's how my NP435 is geared... for ****s and giggles. I have a 3.50 rear axle ratio. My 2nd is like your 1st. My 3rd gear pulls VERY well, and pulls any hill as long as the RPM is at 1100RPM or higher, and will pull easily from a 7 or 8mph roll.

NP435
1st - 6.69
2nd - 3.34
3rd - 1.79
4th - 1.00

My 3rd is more like a second, and your second gear is geared very low compared to my 3rd, so shouldn't you, with 4.55's, pull easily in 2nd?

thats the ratios you have i have no idea where the 1st set listed came from maybe a mustang t5 with the 5.0

anyways i agree you should start out in second that should take you to 50-60mph then 3rd and so on

if you want an auto then a c6 would be fine but weather your truck would be faster with one would depend on how fast you can shift the manual if you can shift like lightning your truck should be faster with a stick especially since a c6 is very "inefficient" compared to other autos

if you want to keep the stick you should think about switching to a zf5 found in
f2-350s it would hold up much better behind a biult 351w you would also want to start out in 2nd in that and its 2nd is right between the mazdas 1st and 2nd which would help

He probably blew up the M5OD a long time ago. This thread is more than six years old.
