agg bagg,

I purchased a good quality oil filter wrench from Matco Tools, I can't remember the cost 20-30 dollars I bielieve. You can order on line or if you see one of thier supply trucks somewhere the owner will be more than glad to sell you one. You can usually find a parts truck such as this at a delearship because the mechanics are usually buying a tool of somekind. Also, any good parts store will have a decent oil filter wrench for the 7.3 PSD.

I actually perfere to change my own oil on my 7.3 for many reasons. Some techs at oil change locations may not understand diesels and thier oil and oil filter requirements.

You can inspect the underside area of the truck
The correct oil, amount, and filter will be used
The truck will not be dry started (oil filter will be primed with oil)
Front end will be greased

Im surprised to hear that the napa filters cost so much there. Up here its the only way to go with the price being 20 bucks after both taxes.

If you wanna go with MC up here ya have to go to the dealer, and provide your own lube for when they tell you their prices.

Megawatt- I have seen and heard the same things about the Fram filters.
I know I was told in the past that WIX makes the NAPA gold filters. Have cut NAPA gold filters apart and thought they looked like a very well made filter.
I use the MC from Wally World.

I do the same after 10 years of doing all but maybe 8 OCs myself. I used to do the screwdriver trick to take them off, but now I just use the screwdriver to drain the filter 1st. Hand tight with a clean hand and filter and its plenty enough, at least for my truck! One less tool to take under the truck with me.

I don't think there's anything wrong with MC filters, but I don't think there's anything special about Napa/Wix filters either. Not enough to justify their pricing. If I use anything other than MC, it's Donaldson. Can get those for less than $12 and I doubt there's a better filter out there.

Hang around a while and you'll be surprised at how much you pick up. You'll be helping others out in no time after doing a little reading, and it's always nice to have the confidence you can fix things yourself with a little help from FTE.

I do the same thing Joe. I did need a filter wrench the first time I changed the oil, the PO must have wrenched it on there good.

Great link. Thanks for sharing.

You can check Here for all your WIX/NAPA filter needs. Much better price than in the stores. A local NAPA here wanted $58 dollars for the 6637 filter.

Try a K&N oil filter it is as high a qaulity a filter you can buy and you get one for about $17 no matter where you live in the USA and when it is time to change it they have a nut welded on the bottom and you take a standard wrench and take it off with no problem.

I either use the MC filters or when I'm stocking up on fuel filters etc., I also get them at fleet filter, much better than Napa pricing.

Great oil filter information. Point proven, all filters are not the same.
