A/C problem

My A/C quit blowing cold so my hubby checked and it was low on coolant. He recharged the system and when we turned it on it would make a noise off and on in the back like a rush of air. 3 days later it quit blowing cold again. He checked and it needed more coolant . He put in more coolant this time with leak sealer and the same thing happened again. Any ideas? I don't want to spend a lot of money on the thing right now since times are tight for us.
It is an 03 Eddie Bauer with 68K on it.

If you keep losing refrigerant then you have a leak. You will keep losing it until the leak is repaired. So step one is to find the leak, then fix it. There's no getting around that.

yeah, what he said up there!

Autozone sells leak detection kits that range from $30 to $50. You get a UV dye, lightsource, and glasses that help see where it's leaking from.

until you really pinpoint the leak, you are throwing away $25 a shot on recharge kits.

If you still have one of the cannisters from the last recharge kit you used, here's a cheaper test procedure.

Cut the hose from the can to the fitting that plugs into the AC system, and attach it to an air compressor on a VERY LOW (like 10PSI) setting. Pressurize the AC system with the air compressor. Take a spray bottle with soapy water in it and douse all of the AC lines, condensor, fittings, etc. If it starts to bubble, there's your leak. When you fix the leak, you are going to want to re-fill the system with new AC refrigerant and a can of AC lubricant Oil. Using the compressor air source can intoduce a little bit of dust into the system, and you don't want to just rely on the oil that is in with the refrigerant refill.

Good luck. AC leaks are a PITA.

Don't forget that the system will need to be evacuated before it's refilled.

ESPECIALLY if you were bumbling around with moisture-laden shop air.....
