A New Wax (At Least To ME)

I bought some Meguiers "NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0" and applied it liberally on my Truck (And new Fusion) last weekend. Today I was driving my truck up to Cheyenne, and back home. (150 miles round trip) I hit every bug in both States, and caught a bunch of what looked like road tar which splattered the right side of the truck. I had a bunch of pollen and dust on it too, so I grabbed the old California Duster and wiped it off. EVERYTHING came off that the duster touched, including the dead bugs on the front end.

I have no stock in Meguiars; just thought I'd pass it along. This *****'s great.

from experience...it doesn't last long, but maybe the 2.0 is different. I've had really good luck with ICE paste.

The other one, which wasn't named like 1.0 or anything didn't last very long...I'll agree. It did last lomg enough though. It DIDN'T let stuff wipe off like this.

I'll have to try it out then, the nice thing about the ICE is you can get it on any rubber or black moldings without worrying about it leaving them white, I actually wax all the trim and side windows with it.

yea ive been using the NXT products for about 4 years now and must say i wont be switching anytime soon.

As for all the black moldings and plastic pieces ive always used F21. It makes it all nice and shiny and protects really well. Also if uve been getting some fade or discoloration it restores it quite well.

I just got the NXT 2.0 last week and couldn't wait to apply it. Now that it's been a week, I've got dust setting on the truck and was thinking about just taking the hose and rinsing it off. Will the wax still keep the nice smooth feel or will I need to wash and wax again to get that baby butt smooth feel again?

youll probably have to wash and wax again to have the feel but the water will bead quite nicely and you should prob have to just dry it to have the same shiny look to it after you hose it off.

wildcard30 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Used to use ICE all the time. But now I only use it on the black items on the truck. It looks great but seems to not last very long. I'm now using the NXT 2.0 and it lastest much longer.

good to know...I use my backpack blower to air dry my vehicles after I wash them...and when the water doesn't run off them as easy and I spend more time towel drying...I know its time for a coat of wax!

I have to put one more post up for the NXT! As a detailer its my personal choice. I lay down a coat of Klasse Sealant glaze with my Porter Cable 7424, and then I lay 2 top coats of NXT....

As a side note....durability is based on your individual truck exposure and method of application....IE near coastal areas wax's durability is shot due to heavy salt in the air..as in the dessert climate the constant UV exposure breaks down the carnuba wax.

Storage too affects durability, you could put Plain Jane Turtle Wax on there, as long as you keep it in the garage it will keep its gloss and beading characteristics....

What keeps the wax feeling smooth is the amount of oxidation on your paint...since you have an 09 I would wait until the paint/truck is at least 8 months old before you clay bar the truck...claying your paint every quarter or 6 months will ensure you have "smooth as glass" paint; not to mention the protection you give your clear coat. (I recommend Mother's Detailing Clay with Meguiar's Final Touch Detailing Spray)

I used the Meguiars clay ba on my last car with the final touch. It made the car very shiny and my black paint looked deep but it didnt leave a smooth finish. I would actually rather the CLAY BAR brand. The one with the little blue clay bar guy lol.

I had used this on my rx-7 and man it did wonders.

I would have to agree Clay Magic is one of the best!! I must have gotten a bad bar...it lost tack after detailing four 04 F150s...

Ok, so being a rookie to the waxing idea... and never hearing about clay bar until I got on here, I have a few questions.

I've waxed my last truck a few times, not nearly enough as I probably should have, but my question is, how do I know if I'm doing it correct? The directions say wipe on the entire vehicle and then wipe off. That's about it... there's got to be a little bit more to it than that, right?

Once I get wiping off the first coat, am I supposed to do the 2nd coat immediately? Why can't I wax in the sun? I don't really have any shaded place so I usually end up waiting until it's about an hour before dark to begin... by the time I'm done, it's past dark and I'm lucky if I get all the wax off.

What is a clay bar? How is it applied?

I know that this is something that I should have learned about a LONG time ago, but I never had the interest until just a year or so ago...

Thanks for your help

Hope this helps ATSW FX4

General Rules for Waxing Vehicles:
  • If waxing by hand use the pressure about the weight of an orange.
  • NEVER WAX in the wind...dust particles get in the wax and applicator causing "spider webbing" in the clear coat (WATCH OUT BLACK PAINT)
  • To achieve best results apply on a cool surface (under 85 Degrees), in a shaded area (sunlight causes the wax to dry out too rapidly not enabling it to "cure" properly to the clear coat), and remove all wax with microfiber towels.
  • PREP ALWAYS makes a difference. After washing your truck ALWAYS use a quick detailer to remove calcium deposits to ensure a "glass reflection," claying every quater, six months, or every month if you live in an area of constant salt or acid rain exposure.
  • Its NOT about how much you apply initially that will give you that "thick layer." Its how long you let it 'cure.' In any case it should be applied in thin, even, 3-5" overlapping circles. Unless using a dual-action polisher such as the Porter Cable 7424 which has its own applying process.
  • When I use NXT 2.0, I layer the whole truck and then let it "cure" for about 15mins AFTER I FINISH THE WHOLE TRUCK.

ATSW FX4's--Now that I'm back in school (GO TEXAS) I'm in an apt complex...I just go to the car wash on a slow night (after the crew is gone if your city has one working) and just wash and wax my truck in the bay. So now you have wind protection, a roof, and a cool surface.

---Also, the easy ups at Academy Sports are a great $50 dollar investment, now you have a portable solution for the BBQ and somewhere to detail your truck. To make it more garage like (when I had to detail vehicles in what seemed to be a wind storm) I drop the painters plastic along the sides.

Last but not least..
  • Always wash your microfiber towels after use. You can use a cap of distilled vinegar to maintain the fiber's "static"
  • Always wash your applicator no matter the material: Sponge, foam, microfiber cube, microfiber towel
  • Always wash your washing sponge..not just rinse it...

A sample of what Prepping does, clarity..This is my truck with 105987.4 on the clock:
