I'm pretty sure they have to scrap the car, and if they don't they could be in serious trouble. But as shifty as dealers are you know they're gonna try to find a way to get around it.

But you have to look at it from a patriotic perspective.

If we all drive our less-efficient but more dependable trucks, we aren't stimulating anything but ourselves, and the owners of the fueling stations (unless we mix our own diesel).

If we trade in these great old clunkers for shiny new Focuses and such, think of how many people get "stimulated":

First, of course, the guy at the dealership, and his salespeople, who'll be happy to take your $4000 in free money. And the banker, who'll be happy to charge you interest on your $16,000 loan.

Next, the guy at the scrap yard, who gets to turn your beautiful old truck into scrap iron to sell to the Chinese so that they can turn it into Kalashnikovs and cruise missiles.

Then there are the insurance salesmen who are only too happy to sell you a policy (in case you put a teeny dent in your nice shiny car) which should include coverage against personal injury, which you're much more likely to have if you get into an accident in a Focus.

And speaking of which, think of all the paramedics, doctors, nurses, personal injury lawyers, undertakers and morticians who will be "stimulated" by all of the accidents involving new Focus drivers. They'll certainly have lots more to do, and that means mo' money, mo' money, mo' money.

And speaking of money, think of how many people at the Federal Reserve and the US Mint will be stimulated by all the new debt creation and currency printing that will be going on!

I could go on, but I think you get my point. Trade in your truck for a wimpy little car, and even though you may lose, America wins. Hallelujah!

That was all sarcasm, by the way, in case you were wondering.

A "clunker story"... few years ago at work on my lunch break, I was looking for a vacuum leak on my 85 Plymouth. The vice president of my company came out to his brand new maxed out Explorer. Looking at me fixing my car he said" Why don't you get rid of that GD clunker and get a new car.." Well that caused this responce from me "Well give me a GD $500 more a month and I will get one, other than that, this "clunker" has been paid off since 91. And I have no problem putting $500 into it to keep it running as I won't have to keep paying $500 a month on a new "clunker"...." He got in is brand new car really fast and nothing more was said. He did stay away from me for quite some time after that! hehe

I will not favor this stupid program as it will only hurt us in the long run. Disposiable society we are and I am about to loose my job over it as many other will too.

It is my understanding that this program is tiered - if you make a certain amount of money, you get $3,000, but if you make less (or are on welfare), you get the full $4,500. So someone that is broke is now supposed to buy a new car?

On a side note, I read that they are also trying to introduce legislation, at least in California that if you turn in a "clunker", then the engine can not be resold and must be scrapped. So I can not go to the junkyard and buy a 455 for my Firebird if it is coming out of a car turned in under that program - making an engine out of production for about 30 years that much harder to get. Where does this crap stop?

I heard there are lawmakers out here in California that would like nothing better to make this plan mandatory if you don't pass the smog test.

I also heard that they would like it so not one bolt can be sold off the clunker that is traded in. "That way these clunkers cannot help keep the other clunkers on the road. If they can't get replacement parts, a taillamp for it, etc... then the ones still on the road will fall apart, then they intern will be taken off the road, untill none are left."

I heard this last one first hand. Forget who said it. It was a female though, I remember that much.

My 1981 does not qualify for the program, thank God!

Sounds very much like Barbara Boxer.

Ironic, isn't it, that it was the mastery of fire that propelled our species to preeminence on this planet, and the three things that idiots like Boxer hate most in all the world (guns, tobacco, and automobiles) all involve some form of combustion.

I say that people like her should be resisted, if for no other reason for the sheer inhumanity of their agenda.

It was the same woman that had the 30 year rolling smog exemption repealed, and was trying to get the smog check to apply to 1960 or 1965 and later vehicles.

Don't forget they are trying to ban wood burning too, and wood burning stoves. To my way of thinking, that goes against the constitution, because everyone has a right to a warming and cooking fire.

I agree, people like that should be sent packing. I try at every election to do just that.

The state is trying to find things to cut. Why not totally do away with CARB!. That would save millions, and since the US government has the EPA anyway, although not as strict as CARB, it's stupid to have two sets or regulations just because we are California. CARB is really a redundant program anyway. It's that way of thinking that has turned this state from a growing leader of economy, into bankrupcy.

You can not forget that this is also the state trying to do away with big screen T.V.'s (take more power to run) and dark cars (harder to cool the inside). This is the land of the hypocrites - a lot of these folks spewing environmentalism out their mouths are driving their Prius home to their big house that they still heat/cool/light. But they keep telling themselves they are helping.......

I refuse to drive something I have to "put on" like a shirt that's too small. I'll just keep my "clunker." Besides, with the government bailing out the auto manufacturers, we've all bought a new vehicle this year anyway, whether we have one sitting in the driveway or not!

I'm not trying to cheat the government. I'm just trying to keep them from cheating me!!!

And yet, I'll bet we would all be amazed at how many morons would take this bait!!!

Sally Lieber? Yeah, she's an even bigger nutcase than even Boxer is.

On the bright side, she's not on the State Assembly any more, but who knows, maybe she'll get appointed Federal Carbon Czar or some stupid thing.

You think all this buy new has something to do with the fact that the G wants to make money from the sale(don't they kind of own GM and Chrystler now)? So they get rid as many parts cars as they can so people have no choice but to buy a new car when crap breaks down.

Oh by the way I wonder how many Hondas', Toyotas', and Nissans' count as clunkers, probably not any of them.

We might imagine that the clunker law will push up the value of our old trucks... but I'm betting they'll find other ways to penalize (tax) ownership, until it becomes prohibitive.

Problem is, as usual, these anal retentive pencil pushers won't stop. They never do. Get ready for a whole slew of "green" intrusions into our lives.

I heard they want to outlaw dark colored paint on cars, to minimize A/C load in the sun. Another proposal, mandatory home energy audits (goodbye fourth amendment).

"Nero fiddled while Rome burned"...these bureaucrats are going to keep fiddling around, until the likely economic collapse (Rome burning, figuratively) starts to look like a good thing, by comparison.

My fourth of July "freedom" rant.

I'm figuring about $8000 to do my '86 frame up restoration, No brainer and I get something very few people have as well as something I can maintain and repair myself, well worth the time and effort.

I want to get buried in this truck
