Battery light intermittent flashes??

I've got a 2002 7.3 diesel Ex. A few months back I noticed that my battery light would come on at idle but when I revd the engine it would go out. Eventually the battery died and I had to jump start it. I took it to the shop and they replaced the alernator, which has a lifetime warrantly on it. A few weeks after it was replaced, I noticed that the battery light would randomly come on and then go out, and it would even do it while driving at highway speeds. Took it back to the shop and they replaced the alternator again under the lifetime warranty. SHortly after that replacement, I was towing my camper at highway speeds and the battery light would again randomly come off and then go out. I haven't taken back to the shop yet, as I suspect they will just take the easy route and replace the alternator again under warranty. Does this sound like three bad alternators in that short of a period?? Any other suggestions or ideas on what it might be??

hofuf is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Did they charge the battery and test it?

I'm not sure, but I will ask. Maybe they were counting on the new alternator to take care of that??

I'd bet that the batteries took out your alt if they were dead when they were replaced. You get one or maybe two dead alts off the shelf, but three is hard to believe.

From another Excursion forum...deep in the forum...

He tried three new altenators on it and they all kept the light on.
Then he opened the last altenator, and as they in most cases are either rebuilt or manufactured somewhere with less expensive workforce, he found the problem. The regulator inside had too much protective wax on it so that it could't get the ground properly. Little sandpaper to connection and life became easier again = light turned OFF.
Parently the other "new" parts had the same problem, as they came from same supplier.
All readings in meter shows normal and light stays off.
