Could a ZF 5-speed replace a M5OD 5-speed on a F150???
Does anyone know if the HD ZF 5-speed (when used on the 4.9/5.8) can directly replace the M5OD Mazda 5-speed when used behind a 5.0. I was thumbing through my 1989 shop manual and it appears the cross members are the same (same number) between the 150 and 250/350. The slave cylinder on the ZF tranny when used on the 4.9 & 5.8 looks just like the slave used on the M5OD (its on the pilot shaft). The slave is external when used on the 7.3D and the 7.5G.
Is the rear of the block the same between the 4.9/5.8 and the 5.0??? Can I just get a ZF tranny that was used on the 4.9/5.8??? Will the pilot bearing, 11" clutch, ect... be the same???? The ZF would be a nice upgrade. The gas ZF wide ratio has a 5.72to1 low and a 5.24to1 reverse! Plus a .76to1 overdrive!!!
Sure a lot cheaper than a NV4500.
Thanks.

There are two different ZF's. One for the small block 4.9/5.0/351 and one for the big block/diesel. The small block ZF has an internal slave. The bolt pattern is the same for all of the small blocks.
If you are going to replace the tranny you may want to replace the pilot bearing, pressure plate, friction disc etc. Compared to the price of the tranny, it is cheap. Once you get the ZF you will not want to take it out for service for a long time. They are HEAVY, you definately need a tranny jack if you don't have one.
The cross member for the M5OD may work but also look for a cross member from a 2wd auto mid 90's, they will work better. Look in the earlier post from Lanero where he changed his tranny and I think Eddie identified the cross member.

Yes, I recall it was a x-member from a 95-96 E4od, I think. I'll take some measurements and see which works.
I don't think I'll replace the clutch....unless I already caused some damage with the sucky ratio of the Mazda 5-speed. I had the tranny and t-case out less than 20,000 miles ago to replace the stock clutch with a centerforce. I also replaced the slave because I broke the fitting trying to remove it....they were not cheap. If the centerforce looks ok I'll leave it in.
Do you know if the clutch/pilot bearing/slave cyl I have on the truck know will work with the ZF? I wouldn't see why it would not.
Yes, I have a tranny jack attachment for my 3-ton floor jack. It will difinitely come in handy...again.

I am not sure if the slave cylinder is the same or not but I recall needing to get the bolts holding it in were the same as the M5OD. The dealer used the M5OD as a reference because they did not put ZF's in the F150 in '88. You might luck out.
The ZF tranny was out of a F250. The clutch disc part # was F5TZ-7550-FA. I did not measure the size but someone may be able to look up the part or you could call a dealer and ask. The slave part # is F1TZ-7A564-A. I have a 2wd and that should not make any difference on the clutch and slave but you never know.
I bought a new clutch/slave/pilot etc because I swapped a T18 for a ZF. The pilot bearing was only $18.50 and worth the piece of mind.
Let me know if I can help with anything else.
