how about another gun thread, storage/ readiness ????

Okay forgive my ignorance guys, never really thought about this or needed to know. Our weapons were always in an armory or unloaded and cleared until we went feet wet. So in this new age of concern for our welfare, how do you store your home defense weapon???? My pistol has always been stored with a loaded magazine unchambered on safe, in a safe. obviously the "best" way actually, to my wife that still isnt good enough. Can you store it long term chambered and cocked or ?????. Seriously I can have it out of the safe in maybe 10 seconds, and on target ready to fire in what you would hope would be fast enough. Then that paranoid irrational voice speaks up, suggesting that even that wouldnt be fast enough. So technically speaking how should your home defense weapon be stored? thanks Dan

Holiver31 is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
In my nightstand, full clip, cocked in the "lock" position on safe. Mine is ready in about 1 second. hehe

I think there are a lot of factors involved. I keep 3 revolvers loaded in a safe. As you know with a revolver, you just aim and shoot. I want to keep them in a place where little fingers can't get to them. Even though my kids know not to touch a gun without Mommy or Daddys help, I want all temptation removed. The consequences are too great. As a kid, my Dad kept his shotgun in the basement hung high enough that I couldn't reach it till I was 12 years old. Moisture wasn't good on it I'll admit. As for all my rifles and shotguns, and a couple semi-auto pistols, I like to keep the hammer dropped in storage. I just don't see any reason to have more tension on the spring than necessary.

I don't have any criminal associates, don't engage in underhanded dealings, and I live in a nice neighborhood. So I don't keep any of my guns loaded. In the off chance an intruder breaks into my house while I'm away, I won't be shot with my own gun if I come home and surprise them.

Cocked, locked and ready to rock... In a safe...This is because of my kids and not wanting to have an accident. My first weapon at hand is a Samoan Battle Ax.

When I'm home and in the bed, my .40 SIG is on my side of the bed between the matress and box spring. I can get it out quick (I've tried it laying on the bed) and have it on target within in a second or two. It's loaded, chambered, but not cocked.

When I'm not in bed, it's unloaded with the slide locked open and the mag is readily accessible at a location I can get to quick but the kids can't. I don't want my kids to even be tempted to try to get to it. Even though they know not to touch it, like was said above, I want to remove any temptation from the equation. I have four handguns and numerous rifles and one shotgun which stay locked up in a gun vault and no one knows the location of the keys but my wife and me (actually, we each have a key...I try not to make her mad).

On top of that, I have a male and female German Shepherd in the house. I know how both of them react to someone that's not supposed to be in the house and I have done some work with them as well. They are very light sleepers and will buy me enough time to get my stuff out if necessary.

In my house, my first lines of defense have multiple teeth, strong bites, and really bad attitudes when it comes to unwanted and uninvited visitors. My second line is a SIG P229 .40 with six loaded mags and a round chambered. If they get in here, they likely won't leave in a vertical position.

Where I keep a firearm is not advertised.
I will say that it/they are in a safe location.
However, it/they are loaded.

An unloaded firearm is nothing more than a paperweight.

Cocked and locked within arms reach. When the nephew comes over, it goes in the safe. Backup is a 60 lb. bulldog.

Well said, Keith!
Safely located and stored, condition, ready to go...........with minimal response time to make ready.

One is loaded with one in the chamber, by my bed. One is loaded with a 30 round clip, and one in the chamber, leaned up behind the door. all my other guns are in different locations through out the state, just in case.

It's "Magazine", not "Clip" for those that don't know, there is a difference.

If no kids in house, then loaded, chambered and hot. It only takes a second to lose your life. I plan on livinga long time.

There very well might be a difference, but it clips into my gun, so therefore it is a clip to me.

I always call them magazines because I was trained that way. But, as long as it feeds rounds into my weapon, I don't care if they call it a turdsled.
