Its just proper terminology, lots of gun nuts are like this. Anyways, as far as the original post goes, My guns stay unloaded, no kids in the house, rounds are within arms reach of the bed.
One is loaded with one in the chamber, by my bed. One is loaded with a 30 round clip, and one in the chamber, leaned up behind the door. all my other guns are in different locations through out the state, just in case.
Hmmmmmmmmmm. . . . The quote below, is a PERFECT reply. . . . .

Well said. Great visual examples, also. Reps sent!

"Hey John, loan me a turdsled, will ya? The follower on this one is hanging up."
Turdsled. Turdsled??? Ha!
Somebody give John some reps for me. It says I have to 'pass it around, more' before I can hit him up, again!!!!!!!
Thanks for the BIG smile, John!!!
Hehe...I like the turdsled. I'm unorthodox, so if it's removable, it's a clip (it "clips" in place). If it's integral to the gun, it's a magazine.
Horsepuller, I once read an article by a former house thief who said that he preferred to break into homes when people were home--usually dinner time. His theory was that way he knew they were on the other end of the house from all the valuables (and probably guns, too!)
Damn it Az, I still have nightmares from that 1st mugshot you posted up....... I dont need to think of a samoan battle axe in hand. might just start sleeping with my gun under my pillow!!! hahahaha Woo hoo!!
Yeah and I have some students teach me the Hacka (Samoan War Dance). I would never attack anyone that did not deserve it.

On top of that, I have a male and female German Shepherd in the house. I know how both of them react to someone that's not supposed to be in the house and I have done some work with them as well. They are very light sleepers and will buy me enough time to get my stuff out if necessary.
Yep, me also but with two female Rottweilers and a useless Bulldog, but his bark is loud and his farts can kill anything.

I don't like to keep mine cocked long term as it may tend to weaken the firing pin spring. Mine are loaded with an empty chamber which I can deal with in seconds in the dark. Besides, I think hearing a 1911 slide cycle will get an intruders attention and may cause him to leave before the fireworks starts. I live in a castle doctrine state and I don't miss what I shoot at.
Remember a empty gun does you no good and if everyone knows yours are loaded they will handle them very carefully if at all. Teach your kids gun safety and that your guns are loaded and they will handle them properly if at all.

Funny stuff...... My former life in the military left me handling live weapons more often than most, and I never picked up on the gunnut thing! I couldnt tell you about bullet loads, feet per second, size comparisons.... nothing, if i pull the trigger and it goes bang I am happy. I do know that I am a fan of big holes! the only gun i own currently is an H&K Usp .40, I intend to back it up with the same weapon in a compact, and a shotgun! I have a 150lb Bullmastiff, but he is a healthy and young 8 yrs old, but that is on in years for a Mastiff breed. Which is why I am no suddenly concerned with my gun. Before I was confident in my dogs stopping power, now he would just be a hurdle, and or distraction. I dont have a job, like cop, related to firearms, I have a strong antigun wife, and A child that I would like to be allowed to be naive for a few more years if i can help it. So my gun is always in a safe, it doesnt even come out when they are home, god willing. I just wanted to know from a mechanics and long term preservation point of view. Is it okay for my gun to be left cocked and ready long term, or even Mag handy slide locked back, etc etc. As i said currently it is safed, unchambered , with loaded mag. It really "shouldnt be an issue chambering and unsafeing it in time of need. I still have some of my old speed and profieciency. Just wondering if the alternatives were okay. thanks guys. Dan

You might be surprised at how quickly your dog will come to your defense no matter the age. We had a robber break into our house while we were at work. My mother had a bad feeling about a construction crew that was working down the street and decided to keep her dog home. This was a wolf/husky mix and the best dog I have ever seen and she was 14 years old at the time. Well, we come home and see one of our windows busted out. Mom grabs a butcher knife and calls the police and I get a dad's colt combat commander and check the house, but I knew he was not in the house as the do was sitting there with this nice little grin and a whole lot of blood. I go and check the dog thinking that she may of cut herself on all of the glass, but it was not hers. Well, cops come, turned out to be a customer from my parents business, and he stated that there has been a rash for five days. My mom mentioned that the construction crew has been here for five days. The officer goes over and checks the crew and comes back and said they were playing stupid, but to watch for someone that has a bandage hand and he was going to the local ER's to check. Well, we see this guy that has a huge bandage on his arm and we call the officer again and he shows up and grabs the guy. Well it turns out that he had a nice dog bit right at his palm. When he broke the window out dog jumped up and grabbed his hand pulling it down to the glass shards. I guess the guy stated he was going to go face first, but decided against it.
I would suggest getting some range time with your HK every month to keep your skills up. Also you would love the compact as it is very nice in limited space. I also put night sights on mine so I do not have to hunt for the sights at night.

I keep my .38 revolver on my nightstand, holstered in my ankle rig (unsnapped). My wife has a .22 semi-auto on her side. Both of these are loaded.
If you're worried about spring malfunctions, buy a revolver.
My suggestion, if you have small children, you can keep the MAG in the pistol, but unchambered. The reason, most children, up to atleast 10 or 11 don't have enough strength to rack the slide. Most pistols take atleast 20-40 pounds to work the action. Especially if you have a 1911 or a Sig 220, this is a good option.
I don't have any kids, but my younger brother (age 11, yes, there is a big age gap between the two of us) is at my house often. Now, understand, I don't have anything against people who do not want their kids to ever touch a gun, but that's not my approach. What I do with my brother, is he knows that anytime he wants to look a a gun, all he has to do is ask. For him, this seems to work well, as he knows that he can look at one anytime, I just have to be with him. He and I have extensively went over handling a gun and knowing how to "clear" a gun, to the point that he gets irritated because of the redundancy of "I clear it, hand it to you, then you clear it." My method of clearing a gun... pull the mag "is it empty? Yes. Push the follower down with you finger. Lock the slide back. Is the chamber empty? Yes. Put your pinky in the chamber to confirm it is empty." After this, I hand it to him, and have him do the exact same thing again on his own, before he looks at it. He has spent alot of time with me at the range too. I just try to make sure I educate him, which seems to work for removing his curiosity.
Hmm... anybody know if pics of our guns are allowed? I thought I'd see if you guys wanted to post a pic of your collection or your favorite one in your collection.
