rear speed sensor???

my rear speed sensor went bad so I was installing a new one and when i pulled it out it was broke. when it broke it let the gear in the diff or what ever that is slip off. i guess my question is are there anything else that holds this gear in its place to run beside the speed sensor?

What truck is this? Most likely you're going to have to pull the cover and take a look inside. The speed sensor doesn't hold anything in place.

It's definitely not supposed to be floating around. It should be bolted to the carrier in some way. I would clean the oil out, bolt the gear back on where it's supposed to go with some lock-tite and put it back together.
