Finally, got my 428 running today after my rebuild. Rain outside, so tuning will have to wait for another day. So now I wait...wondering if that one rod bolt that tightened up funny will break once I'm out on the road.
Always something, no matter what engine I rebuild. Always imagining the worst....always listening for some out-of-place sound.
Takes hours of use before my confidence builds and I feel like I can start to push it.
Now take that rod bolt. ARP. Been tightened 3 times. First time, new engine. Second time due to block cracking. Thrid time because balancer slipped, timing reset, very advanced, detonation, broken piston. Go to do final torque and it seemed to turn more that the others before hitting spec. Why? Doubtful anything was wrong with bolt or nut....most likely bearing was shifting into position a bit, or just bearing crush.
I even double checked it and it seemed fine. But now it's installed, oil pan is on, engine in vehicle and I need to run it some.
I just checked the mirror.....I swear, my gray hair is now white!!!!
LOL...anyone else get those "worriesome" feelings when running an engine you just rebuilt?

Yup all the time. It usually goes like : "Honey, would you and the girls mind sitting up on the bridge. I gotta move the sofa so I can open the hatches. I was sure I heard a hiccup from the engine compartment on the way in the other day."
And everything is usually just fine. And I sleep like a baby.
Congratulations on finishing your motor. Give yourself a pat on the back.

All the time

Thanks guys. Nice to see I'm not alone And.....so far, so good.
Timing is a problem though. Set it statically for a max at 38 BTDC, but I'm getting 21 BTDC at 1000 rpm (mech adv dist only). I may put two "strong" advance springs in vs the one strong one and one weak one there is now. 1/2 my advance seems used up at idle. Mallory......I'm really not all that happy with their distributors.....
Oops....I digressed.....guess I am just happy it is running now. And no smoke !! I need to get a few miles on it, but calling for rain tomorrow and lasting for the next 6 days......yuck!
Ya, right up until the first time I dump the clutch and then there isn't much you can do about it. Don't worry about it.
I've only run ONE light spring in my Mallorys, that gives it just enough to retard it at start, then gives it alot of timing down low(like almost idle). Works for me, though mine are stick shift and that might be an issue with an automatic and detonation?
