will not shift into 1st or 2nd gear

I have a 1997 F150 manual 5 speed transmission. When I put it in 1st or 2nd gear my truck will not move, but it will work in the other gears. Can anyone help me with this problem? I would also appreciate knowing where I can find a diagram of the shifting mechanism. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to FTE LDB907! The shifter goes directly into the top of the transmission. You have bushing in the shifter that are worn out that are causing two gears at one to be engaged, The bushings will have to be replaced. Good luck!

Thanks for the information KingRanchMan02. I am going to try to get the bushings at the parts store, and if they don't have them then I will go to the Ford garage. I'll let you know how it goes when the job is done.

Didn't work

KingRanchMan02, thanks for the idea but I put new bushings in and it didn't work. Do you have any other ideas?
Thanks.
