What year 4.6 will work

My brothers truck 1997 4x4 f-150 super cab 4.6 with 120,000 miles has little or no compression on cyl 2. I am going to pull the motor and remove the head to see what is wrong. It has the romeo engine in it now but if the engine is too far gone will any other 4.6 engines work? Thanks for any help.

Any 4.6 will work. There is a difference in the flex plate for the transmission because of a difference in the number of bolts at the crankshaft. Just use the flex plate from the particular 4.6 and you should be good to go. Good luck!

Well, got the head off today. The intake valve was not seating. I checked the valve spring and cam and everything looks fine. I found out he had replaced that plug with the wrong one. I am guessing that is what caused the valve to mess up. He is going to check around and see which is cheaper...to replace the engine or repair this one.
