turning off the motor? If I run to the store, which takes about 10 minutes, do I need to sit in the parking lot, with the motor running, for 3-5 minutes?
I thought the purpose of waiting 3-5 minutes was to let the turbo's spin down some, if you had just been using them pretty heavily, so the oil could cool the bearings and the bearings would not spin with no oil pressure, not because of the temperature of the fuel. Am I wrong? Just curious

to the original question, no you do not have to wait, but sharber if you have been working the engine/turbos hard towing or something you should let it cool for a moment just dont forget that excessive idling is not good for the dpf.
As trfdfirefighter mentions. You need only wait the 3-5 minutes when you have been towing a large load or been running the engine really hot for considerable amounts of time. The idea being you want to give the turbos and engine a chance to cool down to normal operating temperatures.
A quick jont to the store, may not even get it up to normal operating temps, let alone higher then normal temps.

I have an after market gizmo on the 7.3 that let's me set a timer for from 1 min to a couple hours and then shut everything down and leave. When the timer runs out the truck shuts down. It's called a "Diesel Turbo Lifesaver" (DTLS). Works great at stops when towing. Don't know if they make one for this truck but I would think they would. It's a plug and play with a timer button on the dash. I found mine at a local Ford Super Duty speciality shop. Have no idea on the manufacturer.

I have a 2004 6 liter and have a Pyro gauge on it. They say to wait until it gets to about 350 degrees before shutting down. I've found that even after climbing a hill in 110degree temps pulling my fifth-wheel that it never takes over a minute and a half to cool to 350 from over 900.
If I'm in town it will cool to 350 in about 20 seconds from 600.
