odd transmission issue

I just bought a 02 3.0 escape, they said the tranny was out, it would only grab when pulled down into low, in drive it would just rev up and never move. So I bought it and I noticed it will only grab in low but when you drive it you can manually shift it and it works fine will shift into every gear and work great, but if you come to a stop and try to take off again it will just rev up and not move until you pull it down into low, and you can take off and manually shift it agian and it works. Anyone ever have this problem before and if so can it be fixed or do I need to just swap trannys. thanks

Any tranny codes?Escapes are bad on trans IF you do not change(flush) trans fluid every 30 to 40,000 miles, If fluid has a black tint to it you will prob already have trans chatter or delay in going into gear.Maybe you have a trans range sensor prob and you are over riding it by manually shifting. I have 100500 miles on wifes 03 and have changed it 4 times already. Worked in Ford service dept as a tech since 1977 and have seen quite of few Escapes since 01 where we had to replace trannies, all never had trans service--cust did not believe in it--time change, I remember when people only replaced oil filter every other oil change.Call your local Ford dealer and just ask them about it, if they want your business, they will give you some idea over the phone- or call a private owned trans shop-- there are still people out there that don't mind giving you their personal opinion for FREE!! LOL Blue
