so my friends water pump went out, and we are having an issue getting the fan clutch off. the wrench kit comes with a 40 mm and a 48 mm wrench, but the 40 is to small, and the 48 is too big. Any idea on what the size we need is?
It's 1-7/8". If you can't find one and have access to an air chisel you can just use a blunt tip to loosen it. The fan clutch is heavy and will eat the radiator if you're not careful, the fan and shroud are in each others way and have to be removed together.

Well 48 mm wrench is in hard numbers the same as 1 7/8", so I dont understand whay the 48 is to big. Anyway you can use the air chisel as Rodney said.
I went ahead and bought an actual fan clutch tool set. I can't remember where I got it but it's pretty much a universal set for $20 or so. That's pretty cheap and if you have to replace the pump on the side of the road you can do it.
The only problem that I have with those is that the handles are too short making it difficult to get any torque on them. I welded some 1/4 steel on them to make them longer.
Check the clutch bearing for play before you remove it if you can. If the water pump bearing is toast it might be hard to tell. Mine had a little bit of play in it. So I replaced it. Got rid of one of my weird noises. You will have to pull the upper radiator hose off the radiator. X3 on the card board.

I was on the side of the road and had to brain storm (what's left of it anyways) on how to get mine off. I used a long chisel, laid it in there at a angle to the big bolt and hit it hard. I probably took a chance of hurting something else but when you are stuck you have to do what you have to do. My wife is yelling lets call a tow truck and I'm yelling back, I CAN DO THIS, LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tow truck, what tow truck? lol She has a nice 5th wheel, generator and a/c to sit in while I'm out sweating & busting my knuckles. I was just lucky and had a water pump with me because I saw it starting to leak at the front seal but no, I had to put it off and get on the side of the road where I do my best work. It must be those cars going by at 80mph that motives me!! The chisel does work.
