Hello all, Been a long time since I've posted. I have a 1977 f100 short box, 2 wheel drive with a 302. I'm getting ready to build another 302 to replace the original, but I need help and ideas.
Here's what I have so far:
Headman long tube headers
RPM dual plane intake
Holley 650 DP HP
MSD 6AL ignition box
MSD Blaster III coil
8mm plug wires
14" open air element
All Felpro gaskets
polished aluminum valve covers
I am about to pull a 302 from a mid 90's Explorer with GT40 heads. My questions are as follows:
What distibutor should I use?
What size cam?
Roller rockers?
Etc......
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
you could also go with a hei distributer, i used one on my 302 to simplifie everything.. worked great, and the best part was the whole ignition system was 2 wires.. but with that your msd stuff is unusable. also i woud go with a good crane cam and crane roller rockers.
i did the same swap, pulled a running explorer gt40p engine from my local junk yard.. but i ran into a snaffu, you cant just use any headers on gt40p heads. you need the specail ones they sell just for them, becouse of the spark plug angle. if you are lucky it is a pre 95 engine, then your headers will work. but 96 up like i have you need the specail headers.. you can tell by looking at the head under the valve cover, if it says gt40p then you need those headers.. thanks
Consider a cam such as the Comp 35-430-8 or Ford E303 for about 330 crank HP at 5500rpm, This will put TQ peak at about 4500rpm so 4.10 gears are a minimum with very little grunt below 2500rpm.

I just put a 5.0 roller motor in my 74 f100. i used gt-40p heads with flowtech longtube headers. the only plugwire that i have an issue with is #5. I just wrapped the postion near the wire in some exhast wrap. seems to be doing its job pretty well. i plan to put a 90' boot on there soon and see how it works. but all other wires are more then out of the way of the tubes. but you will have an issue getting the plugs in and out. make sure they are in before you bolt the headers up or youll be sorry...... cant get the socket in there with them on.
