you sure the valves ain't bent Charlie-i never remember one being bad on none of the older briggs I used to work on -maybe bent-but usually the valves rotated as they opened so they very seldom were burned or bad sealing problems-but that was the older in block valves too I know the older ones had removable seats in the block-how are the valve guides? any shake to em ?
valve guides good, haven't chucked the valves in the drill press, and turned um yet, don't know. hope not bent, other motor for parts stopped running the same way.they would prob be bent too then. new valves $23 each. just ordered gasket set was $33.

I would still check the valve timing-strange for two identical motors to do the same thing-when ya think about it it boggles my mind

your right about that, only diff, the other one was actually backfireing, I knew that was a intake valve without even pulling the head. this one never did that, just lost power, then quit

kinda crazy how the gaskets for it are that much-I remember a whole gasket set for a small block chevy was hardly $60 man times are a changing

i can remember one old 5hp briggs I worked on had a hard fiber type valve seat-darnest thing I ever saw-it weren't stock though had bearings in it not the made in ones real bearings-I was impressed

your getting old, gasket for the intake on the project truck was 40.
that's what I'm saying -they are over pricing this stuff-crazy

shoot i remember the old all metal head gaskets -we used to spray them with silver spray paint to help em seal
