She's been grooming for 16 years, she started her own shop in our house 14 years ago, but the town kick her out because she got too big last month, so we moved the business to the new location, It's about 4 miles from the house, and her clients all waited for her to re-open, so now she has 7 weeks of backed up appointments to catch up with.

Well that is good that she has worked lined up... Sucks that she can't continue out of the house so your expenses are now higher..

Yeah but now she can expand a little retail wise, and maybe an additional groomer when she get's that location established. She has over 400 regular steady customers without any advertising, now she's in a higher profile area with alot of traffic passing the shop.

I think business will expand more now.. I find that people shy away from someone who works out of their house.. Not sure why, but I think they get a warm fuzzy feeling if they go to a store rather than someones house..

I have that problem.. People will drag their PC to the Geek squad cause they think they are getting better techs.. I have forgotten more than they know..

When we did the business plan, we calculated the numbers with her current client base and what we were paying as far as expenses out of the house, besides the right off with a home business. She would be making about $200.00 less per month without any new customers. All she would need to do would groom 2 extra dogs a week and she would be $200.00 a month ahead, with the average groom being $50.00.

The rest was a no brainer, location, location, location.......

Good morning Steve, and the rest of the NJ gang and all of the visitors.

Sounds like you and your wife have done some number crunching and it sounds like a solid plan. Good luck.

Yes, the shop is in Rockaway, 2 minutes off Rt 80...my wife grooms an Essex County K9 Shepard, don't know who the officer is by name, but he's a scarry pup, and the wife doesn't have any trouble with him, but the officer stays while he's beeing groomed.

You need to call and make an appointment, they don't take walk-ins, and you need you need all shot records too. They are just swamped right now with the shop being closed for nearly 6 weeks and most of her clients are done every 4 - 6 weeks max, and they had a full schedule they had to fit back in. She is usually booked months in advanced too...make sure you tell Lori (my wife's assistant), you know me from FTE.
