what should be done for a good tune up for the 300 6 ?
im getting my truck: the Buckboard ready for the road agin in almost 8 yearsi am thinking about taking ing it to a mechanic butr i am wondering what should be done regarding a tune up like what things would needed to be checked or adjusted or replaced? the motor is a 300 inline 6 with a 1 bbl carb and new air filter and oil filter ..thats it any help i really appreciate!!!
Plugs, wires, rotor, cap, fuel filter.
Add to that a coolant, trany, and gear lube change and you sould be in fair shape.
A good carb and timing tune helps too,
Another thing to check for is vacuum leaks. After sitting for 8 years, you may start running into brittle gaskets that will let in air. The ones I ran into issues with when freshening up my 300 after sitting for 4 years were the base gaskets underneath the carb. They're cheap and easy to replace, but when they cracked all the way, my engine wouldn't idle under 3000 RPMs and I had to use the brake instead of the gas to control the speed of the truck until I got home.

3.00 rear end and 2000 RPMs @ 80mph!

I too am getting a tune up and searching for parts. I think most of my parts are stock...anyway, I was wondering about the brand of spark plug wires and which spark plugs to use. Also, which coil is best...it's a daily driver.
Thanks
seem to see alot of luck running autolite plugs, and unless your truck is 98 or newer (which i know it isnt otherwise you wouldnt be here) stay away from platinum, titanium, or whatever other fancypants plug they try to get you to get at the parts store. these older trucks werent designed for them and dont run a spark (stock replacementwise) strong enough to utilize their potential. plug wires, you can run autolite wires, or napa's belden, or if you want get the accel ones. whatever way you go, get the better wires, they last waaaay longer than the cheapies. as for the cap and rotor, make sure its got the brass contacts, NOT aluminum meaning get the good ones.
i just did a tuneup on my truck a couple thousand ago. my list was...
autolite copper plugs
taylor 8.2mm streetfire wires
accell cap and rotor
msd coil
i got all the parts off of summit or jegs...i cant quite remember... another thing is to check all of your gearbox's, fluids, and if you are able to double check the timing...why not.. and dont forget to lube up that chasis!
