Question fried alternator wire abd possible upgrade

tried starting my 70 with a390 today and the ground wire from my alternator to radiator support melted. I do not think any wires are crossed my thought is alternator is fried. Its to late to find out for sure.

Also if its fried looking for a quality upgrade to a single wire higher amp model.

any thoughts on either is appreciated

Are Your battery to ground and engine to ground cables hooked up and in good shape? The only time I've seen the Alt. ground wire fry was when the only path to ground for the starting circuit was through that small wire. I suggest checking to make sure You have a good clean battery cable from the negative battery post directly to the engine block or one of the starter bolts, and a good clean cable from engine to chassis (like the one that fried).

brand new batt cables and replaced the ground wire that fried and tried again? I will check the grounds again but the 2 that you mentioned should be OK

Should have, Batt to Block, Block to cab and Batt to Body. Now the alt one will only melt for 3 reasons, Other grounds have gone bad. The (+) from the alt to the harness has rub thru the (-) and grounded out. Or Your cables are on backwards and you back feed the circurt. (Highly Unlikly)

ok checked wiring but did not remove alt yet. Its been freaking raining here for a month.

All wiring is correct, I am suspecting bad ground or corroded one. I would rather get a single wire Gm in a ford case as I have seen in magazines and supply houses. What are your thoughts any better brands than another?

With the Cold you get in Mass, a one wire should do well. If you go with a one wire, try to get at lest one tahst 100 amps and a new Battery to go with it

battery is new and load test excellent. Looking at a 100 or 140 amp alt for future considerations
