ok i have a 2001 f150sc 4.6 motor i just washed the motor and it started to missfire in cylinder 6 i took off the coilpack made sure everything was clean and reinstalled the coilpack. it still misfires is there way to test to see if it is bad now? or will it be ok when it drys out?it has been 2 days since i washed it.
there is a way to check the coil packs with an ohm meter, checking resistance.
another way and i think it's more common is to run the engine wait for it to idle normally and then unbolt them and remove them to see if the tone of the engine changes if it does then the coil pack is still good, if it doesn't change then there's your bad coil pack. i read somewhere that this isn't advised however.
i dont have an ohm meter. you mean start the truck then stick your hand on the coil?? wont it shock me loOl? i have used a simular technic but not on this truck which is to just start it with the spark plug connected to the coil the ground the end of the spark plug to see if it sparks but i didnt know if i really wanted to try that with these.the are pretty pricey to have to replace.

does the 4.6 use 8 different COPS like the 5.4 motor, or other? If it has COPS, you just change two of them and see if the miss goes to a different cylinder.

yes it is the same as the 5.4 just some differences like deck height and others so i was told.thanks for the idea.but i just need to know if it will go back the way it was before running perfect sucking gas like crazy,but smooth. or if i need to replace it.#6 coil.
Well just don't stick your finger at the end of it. But I second what they had to say about switching the coil around. If you have the code reader it's much easier than listening for a change, that's kinda old school anyway.
well i belive that the rubber boots are the original equipment.they are 5 bucks each so i think i will start there.i also noticed that my hoses are looking poor allthogh i have always taking care of changing the fluids i never really worried about the hoses so i will replace all of them and the boots see if that helps. but i until i washed the motor again i had no problems... so im thinking boots
yea i just did the boots, and no 4 coil, new plugs and wires, and fuel filter, at 70k, runs alot better now that the coil is fixed, but the boots were all dry rotted and nasty looking so i think you should be good to go

i used to power wash my 96 ranger 4.0L engine like once a week and when i turned it in at 140k it was like i could eat off it never a problem, so i figured id do the same when i got my 02 f150, big mistake blew number 5 coil pack, few spark plugs and since then i just keep the hood shut unless its to put oil in it, it is so filthy dirty but im never ever powerwashing it again.....

my engine is a little dusty, but there is no leaks thank god. i do like to keep my engine looking clean just cause if i do have to work on it.i want to be able to see what im doing and not spend more time cleaning up then working on it haha. i noticed that there is 3 or 4 different types of coilpacks for my truck does anyone know if there is a difference in what type or brand you get?or even what brand to stay away from?
stay with motorcraft coil packs and spark plugs. don't spend extra money on getting the ones from accel or some other brand because the motorcraft ones are the best ones around for the mod motor. there are a lot of stories out there of where they replaced with accel or different brand of cop and they arced and they are replacing them again not too far down the road.
