Simple bad tranny question

I just bought a '78 F150 at a tow yard auction for $40!! It's going to be put on a tanker and shipped out to Hawaii with me in a few weeks (there's no good old trucks left out there, what with all the salt air) so I'm trying to fix the gremlins now.

I know my way around an engine just fine and this one's great - good compression, smooth. But I don't know squat about automatic transmissions, prefer manual but I'm sharing this truck with the lady.

So, something may be wrong with this tranny, here's the symptoms: hard CLUNK when shifting into drive or reverse, and a good loud GRIIIIIND-CLUNK when it shifts gears, especially when going uphill / under load.

There's enough ATF in there but it's getting a little cloudy. Someone told me this meant it was burning the fluid. I'd be perfectly happy to stick a new transmission in there but can anyone tell me what's probably going on in there? Would a new tranny fix it?

Thanks, everyone. I'm loving this beast already.

Elijah

It would be my suggestion that you do the best you can with it till you get to Hawaii. If you replace it where it is now and have trouble later ,having it guaranteed here will do you no good...

OK, since the condition and use may be un reliable at this point ...Replace it later 100%.

Nothing is more frustrating than a patch job and being stuck on the road later. your lady friend (sharing) may like your wisdom

I agree with John...have it fixed AFTER you get to Hawaii. Now I'm no expert but I've never heard an automatic grind/make noise, it sounds more like to me worn u-joints, loose torque converter, or some other worn mechanical piece other than the tranny.

Sounds to me like U-joints as well. If they are real bad they will grind and even sometime vibrate real bad under any kind of load at all. The klunk you are hearing when you put it in gear is the slop in the worn joint being taken up and coming metal to metal.
