Chambers on the air intake?

Took a few minutes this afternoon to remove the snorkel on my 09 Expedition. I can't help but laugh at all the seemingly random chambers on the intake tube. Does anyone know that these are for? I am thinking maybe they mute the sound or maybe the resonate to provide more of a "truck" sound.

I remember on my 05 F150 I was able to buy just a replacement air intake tube instead of an entire K&N style system. Increased airflow was worst the $40 or so if I remember correctly. Has anyone seen something like that for these engines yet?

EDIT: Here is the intake tube I had on the F150. I remember a special a few years ago for $39 with free shipping. Hopefully they will make one for the 09's

On another note, I ordered my tuner for Mike at 5Star today... should be here next week!

Yes, it is to lower the noise/droning.
