i have a 460 that i could build for my 65 but i don't know what type of tranny to put behind it ? if its and auto what will work ?? any ideas mabey a little help
I have a 460 in my '66, converted it form a 352 with a 3 speed originally.
As for the 460, it is such a great engine from the start that if you build it to 1970 specs, and use all stock parts, you'll have almost more than the truck can handle!
As for a transmission, the C-6 automatic is probably the best overall. The C-5 can be built to handle it but for ease, simplicity and lower cost, the C-6 doesn't get any better.
The most important thing to consider is this: Get the factory Ford engine perches from a '73 - '79 which came with the 460. They will properly align the driveline for best and proper fitment. The 460 sits nicely in these trucks, but put in improperly it will be an unpleasant problem to fix the fitment.
Other considerations:
Is the truck a 6? You will need V-8 springs and a V-8 radiator.
Disc brakes to stop the heavier truck safely
Power steering is very helpful! - but requires steering column changes, as well as the brackets and PS pump on the engine.
Get yourself a donor truck that has a 460, even if it doesn't run. Having all the little nitnoid parts right at hand as you do the swap will make the swap an enjoyable one, and will really reduce the frustration.

As for the specific C-6, be advised that you need one that was behind a 460 or 429. The bellhousing is cast as part of the entire case into the shape of the block, so you cannot use just any C-6.
C-6 transmissions from a 351W, 302 or other engines will not mate to the 460.

thanks for the info i new a c6 would work but not about the c5 i haven't fooled with a big block in a long long time its all been winsor motor the last 25 + years i'll start looking around thanks again
a C6 can also be sourced from any 351M/400 equipped truck. Also a AODE can be sourced from 88 to 96 F250 equipped with a 460. Ambulances are also a good source fro these.

Will the engine perches from a 73-79 also fit a 1961? I,ve also thought about a 460 swap for my uni.
Randy
Randy, No as the 61 to 64 is an entirely different frame with a straight axle.
You need an aftermarket cross member and mounts. Available at most vendors that support this site. To put it in you will also need a new transmission mount available from the same places.
You will also need to remove the old bell housing mount cross member as it is no longer needed and will not allow the C6 to be removed from under neath the truck later on down the line for service.
I have 472 in my 64. The same frame rails as a 61 to 63 uni.

No such thing as a donor as all the parts are aftermarket.
The front cross member is about 90 to 120 bucks
The tranny cross member is about 60 bucks
If you were going to use a FE in it i would gladly give you a FE bolt in front crossmember from the 60s.
