4 Wheeler Questions and Problems

I just bought my son a used small fourwheeler. I have no clue what kind or what size it is. This is the first fourwheeler that I have ever dealt with. The question I have is if their is any kind of transmission fluid that goes into this thing. The problem I am having is when you get in the throttle it wants to cut back and not pull. I changed the sparkplug and cleaned the carb. It ran better afterwords but still cuts back and doesn't want to go. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I've had a few 4 wheelers, and none of them have separate transmission fluid . On my Honda 250ex, there is a lock nut to adjust the clutch ( manual tranny, no clutch). My Kaw 650 uses a CVT transmission so the belt is really the only thing to adjust. My cheapy china 90 has an 'auto trans' that never worked very well ; seems like maybe it has a wet centrifugal (?) clutch plates , and they don't engage very well.

Does it sound/feel like the clutch is slipping or is the engine bogging down ? What kinda of drive train/clutch does it have ?

If you have give us a few more details and/or some pics, maybe we can help more...
thx/good luck,
jeff

This may be a silly question but is it full of FRESH gas? I've had similar problems with my Honda when the gas in the tank was a couple of months old.

Yes I drained the tank and filled it with fresh gas before i started it. I think its its a "China Special". Don't know about the size. Must have had trash somewhere because it cut off and when i cranked it back up it ran a whole lot better. Still having a problem with it not wanting to pull from a dead stop or going up a hill. I think i may have an issue with the clutch. Seems like its slipping at times and not engaging at other times. It does fine going downhill. The chain is continuosly jumping teeth so thats another thing to work out. My son can ride it some now as long as i push it to start off. Hes already had his first wreck.

Some of those small ATVs have safety features on them. Some are throttle limiters, cvt limiters, or a variation. Look to see if the carb butterfly is opening fully and if it is a CVT(Constantly Variable Transmission) see if the belt is worn bad, it should have a little play but not sloppy.

It doesn't have a belt. It just has a chain. It will go once you get going but starting off is a problem.

Although the final drive is belt... some of those small atvs have a belt driven transmission, kind of how autos have a torque converter. Is it a single speed or do you have to shift it?

look near the thumb throttle there should be a little screw that restrics how far you can press the throttle open.

Sorry I meant even if the final drive is chain.

It goes one speed. It moves good enough now for him to ride.
