I always forget that the '99's were susceptible to piston slap, that's a great tip

I guess because they started getting lots of complaints? It was also in the 4.6 and 5.4 engines as well. My '97 Cougar has a slight case of it.

By 2000, it seemed they had done something to alleviate it. Maybe made sure the tolerances were tighter for the piston-to-cylinder clearance.

I'm not a mechanic but was told it was poor tolerences on the wrist pins. I have a 2003 E-350 5.4 that sings a little at start up but keeps on chuggin. Worry when she gives if she ever does, mine started at about 20K miles. Has not gotten worse and allways sounds a little better with a fresh oil change.

Actually, it's the short-skirt pistons that cause "piston slap". The "tick" that is sometimes attributed to piston slap, well, that might be wrist-pin related.

Wow, this thread has kind of taken a life of it' own.. Pics of the headers are in my albums if anyone wants to see them.

PS: I spoke with Ford Powertrain and they said that they updated to 5W20 for 00-05 V10. I changed it this morning with 300 miles and will do it again at 1000 or so to make sure I get all the new "friction" out. I used MC semi-synth because it was all I could find in 5W20.

I'll let you know about performance and sound next week. I was told to keep it under 2500rpm til I had 500-1000miles on it (break in period). I'm on 420 this morning. I don't notice any real difference in sound yet. Though, I don't expect much difference with the stock exhaust and cat still there. Maybe they will fall off next year...
