yep there was more to it, and a few more smart a** comments, but i figured i'd leave them out........ they guy is a real "winner", not a very good customer service type guy either, he had a real attitude when i said that ford called for 5w20 or 30...... acted like i was a dumb a**......... he asked me to leave when i asked if the ASE sign above his door stood for "Ask Somone Else" because he didn't know jack........ he said i could leave and not worry about coming back, LOL!

he ended up pulling the truck behind his shop (that you could see from the highway), and stripped the whole thing down, and parted it out......... i would have liked the axles, and a few other bits and pieces, but i'd rather buy new than deal with his attitude!!

bill11012- i live right next door man (central La) and i've lived in NC for 7 years before that and ran 5w30 and 5w20. it will thin out some, and you may eat a quart over 3-5K miles which is a typical V10 mod characteristic. don't be scared of the thin weight oil in the V10. i run 5w20 in the good ol La heat in BOTH my F250 (weekend warrior), and my new (to me) Excursion V10, that's now my daily driver.

What about the noise?
The oil that makes it clatter has to be worse than the oil that does not, right?

Heres an independant test on Lucas oil stabilizer, or should I say lucas oil foamer. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/images/lucas/lucas.htm

I know for a fact a local garage only uses 15w-40 in every vehicle they change oil in. Where I used to work they got the vehicles serviced there. Be careful who you take your vehicles too. If you don't change your own oil have it done at the dealer. I change my own oil so I know its done right withthe right oil. Some people even mechanics are that ignorant they will never get off of the thick oil mentality.

I agree. Just like the people who say the 460 was a better engine than the Mod V-10. Get over it the V-10 is far superior...And quit putting 50W oil in your mod engine and blamming Ford when it fails claiming they are making a bad engine you idiots....

If it were me I'd run a 5w-30 full synthetic for like 4k miles or so to try and remove deposits and gunk from the dino oil and lucas. A full synthetic will clean better than a dino. After that I would run MC blend. Also Ford recommends using at least a blended oil. You can get 5quarts jusgs of MC blend for under $14 and Valvoline synpower or pennzoil platinum for $21 or less at wally world.

As far as the "Clatter" goes if its real bad you probably have some sort of mechanical issue. I have only ever run 5w-20 in my truck and shure I bet the 5w-30 would be quieter but so what.

You should find out what the clatter is and fix it

Describe it.

sounds like the top end is dry for about 5 sec on start up in hot weather.
I put lucus in to stop it 100K ago and it worked so i never stopped.
I have heard the filter having a bad anti back flow valve can do that.
I use Fram, what do y'all use?

Do you use the plain-jane PH2? If so, the V10 calls for a Motorcraft FL-820S - The "S" stands for silicon anti-drainback valve.

The Fram TG2 and XG2 both have the silicon anti-drainback valve, the PH2 doesn't.

I use the Fram TG2 for my modulars. I have used the PH2 in the 4.6L's that called for the regular FL-820. Never had a dry start.

LET'S NOT get into a Fram bashing contest again. We had enough of that in the SD forum the other day

I have the same thing bill. Try using a fl-820s filter. If that doesn't work, you have piston slap. I have had the 3-5 min clatter in my truck for the last 80k miles. Not much you can do about it but let it ride until its time for a new engine. I have good compression across all cylinders and it uses nearly zero oil between 7500 mile oil changes yet it clatters every time I start it cold.

for a 99 2V ford says to use a blended oil?
So running motor craft 5w30 blend is the best thing for my truck?
