1987 351 Windsor Oil intake to Carb

I have 87 E250 351w with a hose originating from the oil fill tube and entering the carburator intake housing. I'm finding that within a few thousand miles of driving the air filter is completely soked with oil and sitting in basically an oil bath inside the housing. The performance is gone and gas mileage drops to around 8mpg. There doesn't seem to be a PCV valve in the system, doesn't look like it was ever designed with one. Is there any harm in diconnecting the hose from the oil fill tube and replacing with a breather? Any other suggestions how to prevent oil from filling the carburator air filter and filling the housing?

There was a PCV valve designed into the system. Look at the rear of the passenger side valve cover. If custom valve covers were installed, maybe the PO thought the hose to the air cleaner was sufficient. It is not. Air should flow FROM the air cleaner housing TO the crankcase and FROM the PCV to manifold vacuum. Just putting an open breather on will still result in blowby not being properly cleared, with the resultant oil dilution with water and acids, as well as a mess.

Thanks I found the PCV valve and replaced it. I will see if that does the trick.

Great, sounds like that should fix the problem.
