How do I remove 1992 tailgate Ford decal?

I just bought a 1-owner 1992 F-150. I want to replace the damaged FORD tail gate decal. I tried the hair dryer removal with a plastic putty knife. But the decal disintegrates. It wont peel off, and takes forever. Is there a better way?

What happens if I fasten a Carburetor Cleaner or Acetone-dampened cloth patch over it with magnets to loosen it ? Will it affect the paint?

Thanks,
Nevin

I don't know if it will help you or not. But I just stripped all the factory decals and pin striping off my 92, with a pressure washer. It wasn't intentional when I started, I was just trying get a bunch of rust colored crap off my truck. Anyway, it took all the decals and pin striping off without much effort.
You can also get a bbuffing wheel for a drill that is made to take off stickers and side molding glue, etc. I assume it can be found at any parts store or auto body supply.

Eraser wheel. They work very nice. It goes in a drill chuck, but has a threaded stud on it. Apparently there is a threaded adaptor for your drill, but I don't know what it's called. There is also an air tool to run them in, like a die grinder but slower rpm. You will find them at any auto body supply shop. When you use it, start from one end of the decal with the wheel rotating into the decal and move in the direction the wheel turns. You might need a wax/grease remover or light buffing to remove the smudges from the wheel. Don't hold it in one spot or it might burn the paint, and if you have a lot to do will burn out your drill.

Beechkid is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
3M makes an adhesive remover that works well also.

I worked at a dealership when I was young and we used razors to catch the edge of decal to pull off the outer layer of the decal and then used acetone to remove all the glue. I can't remember if we used the acetone to soften up the edges a little first.
