Just my luck... Took the trailer up to Mammoth and picked up a nail in one of the brand new tires, with not even 300 miles on them. I had a flat when it was time to go home. Called AAA and had the spare put on, then had the new tire patched and remounted after I got home. I can't win for losing with these truck/tire problems lately! (At least the truck didn't quit on me this trip!)

I've picked up a few nails in my tires...but you know what...people that DON'T use their trailers...never seem to get nails so part of using and enjoying our toys are these little annoyances...I feel your pain though...especially on a BRAND NEW TIRE...sorry...

In June when we were headed out on our 'big' trip that included Niagara Falls, Lake Placid, Bar Harbor Maine, Boston and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...so lots of miles...well less than 200 miles into the trip at the first 'potty' break I noticed one of the TT tires low...you guessed it picked up a nail...less than 15 minutes later spare was on and we were on our way...got it patched at Niagara Falls NY that night...moral of the story...ENJOY the trip the flats are (at least how I look at them) unfortuantely part of lifes journey!

Take care,
Joe.

Looking at it another way, if you were able to patch it, you just won the lottery. Trailer tires in particularly usually get trashed after a road hazard. Mostly because you can't feel much from the drivers seat.

FYI: We have had two cargo trailer come equipped with Maxxis tires. They all blew out within the first 2 years and I now just use standard trailer tires, whatever the store has in stock basically. I think most of them are towmaster.

I have found that the rubber valve stem is probably the culprit of most of our problems. They dry rot, leak at the steel rim while driving and boom. Now I have the metal HD valve stems installed on all rims. We have 5 trailers and have much better tire life now.

Michelin RIBs

I just got rid of my original tires (Loadstars) and purchased Michelin XPS RIBS, as recommended by many on the RV web sites. The chinese made tires (Carlisle, Karrier, Loadstar) have been getting a lot of bad press for pre-mature blowouts. Many RV'ers are saying to stay away from them.

Got 16" Missions that are made in China on my 5ver, just over 1 year old and about 7000 miles. RVnet doesn't think highly of them but I haven't had any issues.

I keep them inflated at 80 lbs cold and just added a Tire Pressure Monitoring System as I find myself cruising at 75 mph to often(sweet spot on truck with that load). Towed mid day yesterday, temps of 78 degrees, 75 mph and the monitor showed that I hit a max of 93 lbs in each tire.

Piece of mind when cruising and saved some time when departing by just checking the monitor to confirm that they were still at 80lbs rather than manual checking each with a gauge.

Next set will be Michelin Ribs.

Update: Greenball Transmaster tires, Made in China, mounted/installed July 2007, less than 6,000 miles total, 65mph, Interstate 5 southbound yesterday afternoon 48 miles south of Lost Hills, 101 degrees....... boom!

Tread/carcass separated and the steel belts were partially shredded on the driver side rear tire. The driver side front tire also had tread/carcass separation but I drove 50 mph after the blowout and made it the remaining 100 miles. All tires checked prior to departure and were at 80 psi. Tires are covered when the trailer is parked. Passenger side tires look fine.

I was driving too fast for the ambient temps......

Next stop: Sam's Club to order 5 Michelin XPS rib tires.

I had wished I had seen this earlier. The Green Ball's are a very inferior chinese tire. Horror stories abound on the internet about their catastrophic failures at low mileage.

Also avoid anything with star in the model name- Ameristar, Milestar, Loadstar. Same deal.

Good for the money are the Goodyear marathons, Denman and carlisle as well.

Check the date codes on your tires. When they are five or more years old "the fuse is burning".

True!

Here is a video news story on that very issue, as well as how to read the date codes:

Here are some pics of the blown up Greenball Transmaster tire from my WW trailer. It's a 16" tire rated at 3,500#'s.

That's the shredded steel belts, what's left of them!

I'll start another thread just for this blow out.

That is awful. I don't know what I have on ours but I know that the factory tires were not rated to carry our 40' toyhauler empty, 12,500 lbs.
I had the dealer install a higher rated tire and my only concern at that time was the load rating. I will look at the tires tomorrow. Sorry about your I-5 experience.
