I am looking for a muffler with dual 2.5" inlets that will make my 460 fairly quiet without significant restriction. I am aiming for a dual inlet because that is how the exhaust is set up right now (no Y-pipe). I would ideally like dual outlets as well, seems that would be the best for flow, unless I had a larger outlet.
I'll be running a simple setup with dual outlets infront of the passenger rear tire to keep things cheap and simple.
Any input appreciated, my neighbors will also appreciate it since the old rusty muffler is now sitting in the bed
Why not just 2 mufflers with the oval vertical?
There's room, I've thought about doing it myself.
You could weld the flanges of your old muffler onto them.
Larger mufflers will help more. Especially having one muffler on each pipe, however that can be expensive. Having cats will make a huge difference. What year is yours?
I cannot vouch for its sound on a cat-less 460, but our 22" WickedFlow mufflers are reasonably quiet.
I have considered a bus muffler, that is what used to be on the truck, but it was so rusty when I bought the truck that I can not be sure how quiet it ever was. It did have many chambers and seemed to be relatively free flowing though.
My only reason for not preferring two oval mufflers next to eachother is cost. Seems that the cost of a nice set of two mufflers will be greater than a quiet but good flowing single muffler with dual inlets.
This is about the quietest flowmaster you can get and it has a lot of capacity. Its pricey but less than what the price on the link says. A 2.5" pipe can easily be expanded to 2.75". http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/pr...oducts_id=3330
I see no problem with running dual 2.5" dual in/ single 3" out muffler either with a 3" tailpipe. The 460 doesn't rev that high in stock form to need a tailpipe larger than 3".
Also if you want a mellow exhaust note, exiting the exhaust in front of the rear wheels is a bad idea. The exhaust will be louder exiting in front of the rear wheel than behind it.
Seeing that it is a '77, I would not recommend cats, to many things to go wrong.
I second that, exiting the pipe in front of the tire is what you do when you want it louder. If you want to mellow it out, go behind the tire. I would also second that running a single tailpipe will help with the volume too, it condenses and smoothes out the tone, and helps the muffler do its job.
