Shake of doom

me again,
my 2003 F 4X4 4.2 has the death shake about 40mph then
gets better at 60 or so up to 175 or so. (speedo dead, might be +- 100 mph) I've had the tires balanced, front end checked and straightened out.
It still shakes hard enough to make my Miller foam. What do I check now?

U joints can create a nasty vibration if frozen or just plain toast. Is this a stick or a automatic?

Hm, it's a 5 speed.
You think a u-joint would come and go with speed?
It's another thing to check. Thanks for your help!

Get down there and give your driveshaft a jerk or two.
Could the driveshaft be out of balance?
To check if your driveshaft is out of balance drive it into a pond, lake, or other body of water and when you salvage it from the depths your driveshaft will be balanced.

Just a follow up on the rolling earthquake. I layed under her a gave the shaft a good hard shaking, front and rear, and , as always, nothing moved. Any thoughts other then a good soaking? This should be easy for you guys. I mean it is a death shake then smooth as glass......???????

If the tires were not rotated when they were balanced, then rotate them. If that doesn't help, them pull the drive shaft out and check the U-joints with the drive shaft out of the truck. They should move in all directions smoothly. Good luck!

Thanks friend,
swapped tires front to rear after jacking the whole truck up on jack stands and running her in 4X4 and finding a shake in the left front wheel
which upon closer inspection found a bend in the rim. put it on the back, still some shake but at least it does'nt make your hands go numb.

How in the world did they balance the tire and not find a bent rim?

Of course I was kidding about the water soaking idea.

That is the million dollar question. Maybe it was a balanced wobble

You will want to replace that wheel. If it's shaking that much it can still cause a seal to blow out in the rear. Extreme, I know but still possible.

I suppose it's possible, but even the worst POS balancer will find a bent rim in about 2 seconds. Maybe they were bubble balanced?
