C4 Output shaft

A friend of mine has a C4 that he is wanting to replace the long output shaft with a short one but the shaft won't come out. Did some years have a C clip or something to hold them in? All the ones I have done pulled out once you took the bolts loose and remove the outer casing.

It comes out from inside. It does not come out through the back of the trans. Take all the rest of the parts out of the trans, the last part out is the output shaft. It's the first part back in the case on the rebuild.

Thanks for the info. So when did Ford change that on a C4? Just got done removing the tailstock on a 78 C4 and shaft and all came out.

All C4s and C5s have a snap ring on the inside on top of the rear ring gear that hold the output shaft in. If yours just pulls right out, the snap ring is missing and it could cause one or more of the trust washers to become mispositioned and fail, it also might cause the governor control rings not to seal correctly.

jk080,
Thanks for the info. So far all the C4s I have taken the tailshaft off of have pulled right out. I would hate to think that many are missing the snap ring. Better look at the last one I did when I get home.

Short versions.

Do not have an internal snap ring because they are held in with a big nut on the flange.
All long shaft models have an internal snap ring.
