In the market for a 08 F 450 King Ranch

Hello every one,
This week I may be possibly going to look at a new to me 6.4 with 80,000 miles on it. I know the 7.3 inside and out but I am a complete idiot when it comes to the new 6.4. What should I be looking at when I look at this truck? I know the venti mod should be done to it buts that's about it. Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Nick

venturi mod, look at the radiator real close, the seams to ensure that is does not have any leaks.

As if it has had the latest pcm updates so you can see the "cleaning exhaust filter" message in the display.

Check out the message center and get to the engine hours, see if it is higher that it should be for the miles. I would think the truck should have around 2500 hours on it.

Ask to see maintance records for oil changes and filter changes.

Alright thanks. What about soot in the exhaust is that ok?

soot indicates that there may be a issue with fuel trim levels/sensors for the DPF or DPF itself so it does need to be checked.

A little gray is ok.

Hi warrior, I just made the change a week or so ago. Still have my 7.3 and I'm deciding which to keep. The 08 really drives and tows wonderfully and I'm sure the 450 is even better but all this DPF talk has me concerned, not to mention the 12.8 miles I seem to be averaging in routine driving. I can't wait to see what it is when I'm towing. My truck only has 4000 miles on it and when I checked the oil it looked kinda funny. I read on here that there is an issue with leaking injectors that put diesel fuel in the oil pan, hard to get a good reading with that funky oil dip stick but it seemed high on the mark to me so I went to a dealer and got that first oil change on the record by them just to get a relationship going. I have to say it runs and drives nice and towed wonderful, I've had two of those regens or whatever they're called and they were uneventful. I wouldn't have known they were happening except the message board told me. Hope this helps.

Well StanleyZ and weekendwarrior, I can't keep my mouth shut....

I have run my 6.4 as hard as I know how, never babied, I don't worry about idle time, and I consciously try to blow it up if I think that something could be wrong. Never had any real problem. Yes, the radiator and I lost an EGT sensor.

I understand that the comfort of the 7.3 is real and I respect it. The 6.4 is the best motor and truck I have driven (which is not saying a whole lot, but some).

I know the MPG is crappy and I know that people write about problems, not satisfaction. If you want a new truck you will not get a diesel that gets above 18mpg doing anything. The bowtie/dodge trucks have the same issue. The blue oval just happens to have the best chassis to boot!

I don't really have a bone to pick, just calm down and enjoy the best truck available. sorry to sound gruff. I get tired of everyone complaining about this stuff sometimes.

Might otta read mine again, I thought it was pretty positive and warrior hasn't said anything. Down here in Georgia we say 'it's the hit dog that yelps". Now have a nice evening.

"but all this DPF talk has me concerned"

Stanley, you're right. Most of your post is positive. I got set off by the above quote. Nobody knows what the DPF is going to do after 4 years of service, everybody wants to have problems with it while in warranty.

I am from Georgia. I'm a Dawg, class of '92, and '93, two degrees. I'm also a Vet.

The "hit dog" comment makes a lot of assumptions about somebody you have never met in person. I know my post was agressive but there are over 500 threads in the 6.4 forums on DPF and MPG.

have a nice day

sbaset, I think you just have to push the "info" button a couple of times to get engine hours. Be careful if you get into the compass recalibration, it will haunt you for hours unless you complete the process it want you to go through!
