98 Eddie Bauer Expedition transfer case

Dealer tells me the transfer case is locked up in low gear. Went out completely at a stop sign. Kicked back in eventually but would not shift out of low. A service writer at another dealership told a friend transfer cases on this vehicle NEVER go out unless you abuse them offroad. Such is not the case.
Should I get a second opinion before dropping 2K$?
What should I pay for a used one?
Should I even think about a used one?

I'm a total newbie to this forum, but time is of the essence.

TIA

JRE

Heck yeah, $2,000 for a transfer case, screw that. I would just go to a junk yard and pull one off of an expedition it will probably cost you $300! Also you could just cut all the electrical wires to the transfer case and then it should dis-engage out of 4 LOW. (ONLY DO THIS IF YOU WILL NOT NEED 4X4 UNTIL YOU CAN GET ANOTHER ONE)! HOPE THIS HELPS!!
