57 truck,272 or 292

I am thinking on putting a Y block back in my 55 sunliner and a local junkyard has a 57 F350 or larger with a V8 that is complete and probably the only one that still has the air cleaner on it,I know some years the trucks had the previous years smaller motors so in a 57 would it be a 272 or a 292 if its still the original motor.

Except for those blessed with great memories, all questions like this are referred to www.ford-y-block.com . Looking at the chart, the engine would only be a 272 if it has an ECG casting number, and assuming it is original to the truck (very possible it is not). For casting number location, again check the site. To be able to locate the number with engine in truck can be tough, especially for the grime and lack of visibility, but it is possible. Rags, solvent, mirror, flashlight all help.

Your post indicates that there may be more Y's than the '57 laying around. If so be sure to let others know far and wide where the junkyard is, after you have obtained everything wanted and needed. Too often the engines end up in a melting pot, or are allowed to rust into oblivion.

The yard has quite a few Y blocks but most have parts missing and no hood which equal a junk motor,it was too hot today to check all over the yard for more that are complete and will check when I go back. If anyone wants to know where the yard is PM me but most of the motors are probably junk.

I did post the same question on the Y block site but no one has responded yet.
